Fine Tuning Your Setup and Swing

Sun, 04/27/2014 - 11:00 -- Don Trahan

No matter how good you are at playing golf, you've still got to be able to fine tune your setup and swing. Most problems in your swing are directly related to your setup, so it's important that you work on both on a consistent basis.

I received a very nice letter from a wonderful couple who I recently had the pleasure to work with. They had some good fundamentals, so after some fine tuning and instruction, they started to see some awesome results.

Don hi,

Just want you to know, that both Nora and I decided that our lesson with you was the most valuable (and enjoyable) lesson we had in our 45 years of the game we so love. Without having to hit a zillion balls, you immediately detected the flaws in our swings, explained understandably and wrote down instructions for us to take home and work on! You managed to give us a new focus and invigorate us. You have created two warriors, ready to take on all other members of our golf club.

When you plan a next trip to Europe, please inform us ahead of time, since we would much like to meet again.

Many thanks!

Lex and Nora

Just remember that your golf game requires constant work. This is especially true for golfers who used to be rotational. Turning too much can be a hard habit to break, but that's why you must stay sharp mentally and remember the parameters of the Peak Performance Golf Swing.

Keep it vertical!

Great daily reminder today - your finish. For me, I find the rehearsal of this excellent finish position as the best reinforcement of doing a great PPGS swing.

In fact, the only swing thought I look for is getting myself into this finale, and then just watching that little white sphere sail away. It is really amazing, our golf body, when you get yourself setup properly to the target, and then as you address the ball you imagine getting into that perfect finish position that Surge so eloquently demos today. Oh, the ball just happens to get in the way, and everything else seems to work out.

Try this as your only swing thought - high hands, square faced to the target, front foot weight, recoiling and relax - you will be pleasantly surprised!

Love this reminder. I too always know if I was set up and aligned correctly if I can comfortably finish facing the target as described. Aside from monitoring whether I am aimed too far right I mostly need to make sure I am centered over my feet with the wide knees and outward pressure. I will occasionally have my weight too far back on my heels and that leads to the unbalanced finishes Surge mentioned.
It's been refreshing to read the comments of several of our die hard golfers the last few days. More golf is being played by many here in the United States as many are recently able to come out of hibernation and thaw out there golf swings. Fundamental reminders like the one read here along with deeper fine points like the ones brought out by the likes of Steve and SGW, Kevin, DH and several others makes turning to the Swing Surgeon blog fun again. Keep 'em coming guys and......
Golf on!

Rob: Well put - got to thaw out my swing yesterday at Plumbrook. The winter weather really has hit courses hard, this course is usually is great shape not so right now. But still playable, and the greens as fast as ever.
Didnt score well 47-45-92. Short game aint there yet, plus 3 3-putts. Did chip in for a par on one hole and had four one putts on the back. Driving it great hit 8 out of 14 fairways. The 12 degree driver I got fit for is really working great. Looks like that will be it for a while - the forecast the next 10 days: PU. Look forward to chatting up this season. DJ: Good luck this week. Surge: Thanks again for all u do.
Hitem well friends,

Jerry,
Glad you started the de-rusting process on your sticks. Sorry about all your storms. They say Summer will come eventually! Hang in there:) Nice to hear your fitted driver is working for you. Keep us updated when you get out again.
Come on sun shine!

Surge let it slip out on the previous video that he's planning another trip down under in November and Iv'e already agreed to undertake some private tuition with him. Iv'e hit a brick wall with progress and I feel that it's the only way forward, given my lack of sporting prowess. At last, a one on one with the Maestro, can't wait.

I just finished reading an article on GolfWRx:

http://www.golfwrx.com/202921/the-difference-between-professionals-and-amateurs-is-in-the-ground/?utm_source=Newsletter+...

This gives a visual and tactile reference that I think most of us amateurs are missing. One of the key items from the article is that the type of swing is irrelevant to how the weight on the feet changes from setup to finish. I think every Surgite should read this. I tried the processes discussed and received almost immediate feedback.
