Ed Lyndsay down in Naples, Flordida sent in this question a little while ago:
"A subject I have not seen you address is the elevation of ball flight. I have been using the Surge swing for almost a year, I'm 81, 5'5" tall, 145 lbs, 15 index and use a 10.5 degree driver. I hit a high ball and get about 190 yds. Occasionally, I will get a lower trajectory and the ball will go another 10 to 15 yards. Any thoughts on how I might develop a consistent lower trajectory?"
Indeed I do, Ed. Watch the video for what I consider the "undergraduate course" in how to hit a drive with a lower trajectory. There are a number of ways to accomplish this depending on what the specific set of conditions you are facing. It's tough to cover completely in 7-8 minutes, but I'll give it a go! [For the "graduate" level course on this topic, plus a lot more, check out my instructional video, Working The Ball. It has everything you need to know in order to shape a shot precisely the way you want.]
Keep it vertical!

ÃÂ I am happy with mine.
A friend of mine I don't get to see that much anymore because his sales area is Northern Ohio and Michigan we don't get to play much anymore stopped by work today. He is a vertical swinger himself and a very good player better than I am anyway. I had showed him my online lesson from Don and he loved it. He suggested one more thing to me that was I have a old 2 iron that I keep at work he said grab the club and make your swing so I did and he said that if you are trying to make the same swing as Don your not even close . His first suggestion was to stand up taller to the ball which will get your ankles back under your hips and flex the knees but don't over flex them.
ÃÂ The second suggestion was to take my PLHR setup then forget about my body all together don't even try to turn and just swing the club back and up and stop now your in a perfect 3/4 swing position with your hands in front of your body like his your shoulders are turned 70 * degrees.
Any way he threw me a drill its basically the pump drill for the FUS. He had me get to the top of the BUS and stop and let the club drop about 6 inches and stop and do it again and then go back up to the top then bring the hands / club down to waist high and stop now look at how much lag you have compared to what you have in that video now start the process again and on the last time stop at impact and asked where my wait was at impact it was on the out side of my left front foot and the left hip was turned slightly open now from there all you have to do through impact is continue turning the hipÃÂ and swing up to the top.
This sounds like some sound advice and am going to add this to my practice routine.

Dick;ÃÂ Lynn42 beat me to it, but yes, I really like that video and that is the way I play most of my shots nowdays; just by standing taller/straighter for a lower ball flight and adding more spine tilt to increase the flight.ÃÂ Easy to ingrain, simple to rermember, and works every time!ÃÂ Take care and as always, hit 'em straight!ÃÂ R2

There it is Dick. Now save it to your favorites as should everyone on this site!!!!
If you watch the video of
If you watch the video of Surge hitting varying height shots with his driver from caring tee heights, you'll notice that he never grounds his driver no matter what trajectory shot he plans to hit.
Loved this one Surge! Back to
Loved this one Surge! Back to being scary again ; - )ÃÂ Yesterday re-configured my r7 to 'lower neutral', which had been giving me good distance on rollout [as you callled it]. Due to the weather [and the cheeky sun has just come out, but the wind is quite severe still], only able to swing on the rear deck. I had started going through the Roy Reed GBSAPS routine, after thinking it through, and before really starting. When something which had niggled at me jumped into my mind. I intended to use the oneÃÂ ÃÂ club swing with the PW and the Driver to get the 'skipping a stone' motion going. The thing which had been niggling at me, was during the set up routine. One thing I had been forgetting, was after taking my grip, setting up to the ball, PHLR etc, was the slight almost 'nudging'ÃÂ inward tuck of the right elbow. This so that the crease of my right or rear elbow was pointed upwards to 12 o'clock. So I did so. The effect was big smile producing stuff.
I swung both ways for a while, to compare results. Now I know I have not had the opportunity to try this with real balls on the range or course, but the result has me convinced it will make a HUGE difference on my ball striking and accuracy with the driver and woods. The 'tuck' of the elbow, allowed me to lift the club far more easily than when I did not do it.
A good pointer for me was, the artificial grass stains on the bottom of the two clubs, ie, Without the elbow 'tuck' the stains from burning the grass, were across the bottom of the clubface at a slight angle!!! With the elbow crease upwards, they were 'ON-ON_ON'ÃÂ : - ]
Can't wait to get out and give it a go.
Hitting lower here [when it is not wet and soggy] I get a lot of run out of the driver.
This brings up another point:
When we judge distances with each club, does the distance include the amount of run the ball consistently makes or not? I am talking about woods and irons. Puzzled DH

Mike,
That sounds great. The pump drill is one I've messed with and you've inspired me to look closer at it again. I don't want to get into my video at the moment but I will say that every time I tape my swing I'm shocked at how far off I am in certain aspects. The down the line is most revealing and I am once again not nearly as vertical as I want to be and past 3/4's again. I will start working on this even before I get feedback from Dave and Surge. I'm going to have time to work on some drills tomorrow at the range before going out for 18. I have been spending like 75% of my practice time on and around the green so my short game is looking sharp but now my longer game is off again. I guess we keep adjusting and seeking improvement while enjoying the journey best we can Mike:)
Happy golfing pal.

Lynn42:ÃÂ Thanks forÃÂ getting the video reference - this is a classic!ÃÂ As I recall, Surge was demonstrating this to his filming crew after they had finished filming for the day. As usual, this is really cool stuff !! R2
About Ed Lyndsay's concern
About Ed Lyndsay's concern with trajectory, isn't it possible that the kick point on his driver shaft is not correct for his swing? ÃÂ I would think that a proper fitted club might help.
