Stressful vs. Stress Free Golf

Wed, 10/15/2014 - 14:00 -- Don Trahan

The human body is a pretty amazing thing. It can even tell us when an injury is approaching. Our bodies give us tension, stress, and strain as a prelude to pain. So why do golfers insist on over rotating, especially on the follow through to finish?

A good finish means that you are balanced and stress free. With a rotational swing, this type of finish is just not possible. Instead of facing the target at the finish position, a rotational swing makes you finish with your arms around your body. All that twisting can put a lot of torque on the body, which can lead to all sorts of injuries including the back.

If you're starting to feel a lot of stress in your lower back area, you are most assuredly rotating too much on your forward swing. You should be able to feel that you're going to a very stressful position.

In my opinion, the forward swing to the finish is the biggest cause of injuries for all the professional tours today. If they are highly conditioned, professional athletes and are getting hurt, what do you think will happen to you?

Make sure that you're swinging vertically and ending in a solid T-finish position. Recoil and relax and you should be facing directly at the target. Swing correctly and you should never experience back pain again!

Keep it vertical!

Thanks Surge. We can always use a reminder that over turning is potentially rough on the body. So many golfers crank so hard finishing well left and that creates so much torque on spines not intended to twist that far.
On another note. Golf weather is beyond perfecto here in Las Vegas. Around 88-90* this week. We played Wednesday but Friday will be at the Shriners Tourny watching the pros. We go every year and often work as score keepers but will just follow several players this year. Fun as usual.
Hope everyone is well.
Keep it in play:) and make some putts!

Robert:
Enjoy the great weather and great golf:) Wednesday I played 36 - played OK, 90,88. Just a little inconsistent, just like the weather. Haven't played much and the rust showed. Did chip in for birdie on 5 the first 18, and parred 3 out of the last 4 holes the 2nd 18. Probably the last outing this year - forcast pretty chilly the weekend and next week. A very good year, broke both my 9 and 18 records. Definitly played the most golf ever - thanks to this wonderful method of swinging the club (THANKS SURGE!!!). Play well friend and stay safe:)

Surgites: What is DJ's status for the Qualifying school? Does he have to prequalify or is he in the final stage? Everyone play well and stay safe.

Surge: Hope you are healing well, again thanks for the dailies and all of your material.

Surgities,
15 yrs ago I was an 18 handicap and was considering giving up golf. I have the lower 4 verebrae in my back is severely deteriorated and by the time I was aproaching the 18th green I was in severe pain. At that time I saw Don Trahan on the golf channel and found out he was at a club in Greenvile SC. I went to Greenvile and met him and we talked for a while . I started taking lessons the next day. Over the next 6 months I saw him once a month or more frequently if needed. My back pain decreased to the point I had very little or no pain when I finished playing a round of golf.My handicap went from 18 down to a 7 in those 7 months I still go to him for refresher lessons and even attended some of his schools. He was a Godsend to me. After 15 years we have become friends.Thank you Don Trahan.Your are the greatest teacher.

Harold, Hello from downunder again, good to hear things are going well with
the little white ball, hoping to catch up with Don early next year as I believe
we are on his short list now and have agreed to see him privately.

Wish I had regular access to Don like you had, would have made a lot of
difference as I'm not that good at self instruction, just have to rely on the titbits I glean from this blog. Couple of weeks ago Don had a video on the
wrist action in the takeaway, which I thought was a nono, so i put it to the test in two competitions over the weekend, finished 5 & 7 under my H/C of
18, the first had a high "slope rating" ( 133 ) now I'm on 16 and with three
away trips coming up incorporating 2-3day competitions, am full of confidence.

Will mention to Don that we met when I see him next, good luck.

It is great to hear that Surge will be back to teaching PPGS. I hope you can do some schools in the Orlando this winters. I would enjoy having the opportunity to have him work with me to get me over the hump with my PPGS swing.
