Your Clubs Are Your Golf Tools

Sat, 11/22/2014 - 14:00 -- Don Trahan

When you're faced with any type of job, it's a lot easier to attack it with the right tools. Golf is the same way, and each club in your bag is a different tool.

Most amateur golfers buy golf clubs at a sporting goods store or online without even knowing the exact measurements of the clubs. This is a dangerous way to buy clubs and play golf.

I've seen tall players with clubs that were too short, and short players with clubs that were way too long. It's all a matter of getting to a PPGS certified fitter that understands your swing, your body, and the optimum way to build you a set of clubs.

Keep it vertical!

P.S. Don't forget that we now offer a custom set of clubs here at Swing Surgeon.

Thanks Surge. It's so good to see you healthy and back in action. I agree 100% about the need to be fit. You also mentioned lie angles and that's the cheapest fix in any town. I know I have recommended that one to my fellow Surgites many times but will say it here again. At least once a year all should have them checked unless you play as often as I do (or more often) several times week. Then two or more times a year. Our friends down under are now enjoying their summer season. Hope they and any one else blessed to still be able play are enjoying the game.

Robert, I can vouch also the need to get properly fitted, had my woods re-shafted and irons replaced while in the states last year and now hitting my 3W 20-30m longer than the originals, some of this extra length is due to a better technique, but most of it came from fitting.

Think we are blessed down under as we play all year, specially on the west coast where our climate is in the Temporate Zone. Sure, we have our heavy down pours of rain, but a lot of it comes at night and what comes during the day usualy drops and inch or two, then is blown away. I can recall playing all winter with a group early mornings on the same day and not missing a game.

Looking forward to Surge heading to OZ early in the year.

This is all very well but PPGS fitters are few and far between - I don't even know if there are any in the UK. Most of us therefore have to rely on our local professional or club company fitters.

Doc offers remote fitting options as a part of his services and he's extremely good at it. Also for the last two years, Doc has visited the UK for fitting sessions. The 2014 trip, he had open slots left that no one took.

The opportunity has been there, you have to take it.

Just want to share with you that I met twice this summer with PPGS certified fitter Greg Courtnay in Ionia, Michigan. To say the least I was overwhelmed by the experience. My first meeting with Greg lasted over 3 hours. during that time he evaluated all my clubs for length, shaft etc and performed a club fitting for a new driver. I am 5'5" and my clubs were too long. I had such good success with my new driver (accuracy much improved) that I went back to Greg for a fitting for fairway woods and one hybrid. Again Greg spent over 3 hours with me doing the fitting and giving me PPGS swing tips along the way. I cannot say enough about how positive my experience with Greg has been. With my new shorter clubs I fell much more in control of my swing, if that makes sense. Based on the characteristics of my swing, Greg built the new clubs using heads with a slight offset. I think offset is the right word.
Just can't say enough about how positive these sessions were, how much time Greg spent with me, and the outcome.
