The Bump
The Bump
"Do we clear our hips like a rotational swinger," asks a reader? No, not exactly. The key to starting the swing is the Bump. You have read it in our books, watched it in our videos, and maybe looked at a daily video on it before. I am going to explain the bump in another context of clearing the... more
Master one of the most critical movements in the Peak Performance Golf Swing - The Bump. The bump is a small lateral shift in the hips that is a part of the chain reaction of events that leads to square and solid ball striking. But this small movement is often a difficulty for students.
We all have times where we "loose" our swing and stop making the proper movements to execute the Peak Performance Golf Swing. I found that I was not executing the PPGS myself - me the master!
The Bump is one of the keys of the Peak Performance Golf Swing but it must be executed correctly. We find that a lot of people think the bump is a profound movement in your body - it is not! The Bump is a small movement of the hips in the transition of the backswing to the forward up-swing.
If you play with a rotational swing, there's a good chance that you are delofting your club at impact. The reason this happens is because the first movement of a rotational player is a turn. This causes you to get ahead of the ball, which means you can't straighten your arms out at impact.
You've probably heard golfers mention "the slot" before. This is basically the path from the top of the backswing to impact. The goal is to actually feel the club "drop" into the slot after you begin the bump.
The bump is what starts the transition and keeps you swinging down the proper line. Without it, you would be forced to come over the top. I got an email from a gentleman named Pondeli Apessos who thinks that the bump causes him to mishit the ball.
