Proper Swing Thoughts

Sun, 05/01/2011 - 19:25 -- Don Trahan

What should you be thinking about on the driving range? Should they be the same thoughts as when your out on the course?

I think in order to effectively utilize the Surge Swing, you always have to be aware of the elements involved in the swing. For example, to simply go out on the course and only worry about your aim is doing yourself a disservice.

Now, I'm not saying to go out there and be so mechanical that you lose your feel. But, you always have to incorporate what you practice on the range when playing an actual round on the golf course.

Keep it vertical,

The Surge!

Hi Tmedley,
Hope you were able to get your league in today.
Were you able to reach John today about your fitting? Forgot to mention, he said I also actually need LESS flexible shafts than my current Ladies flex (please notice I did not use the opposite term, I know where you guys' minds are!) based on my swing speed. I'm hoping that speed gets even faster as I really get this Surge swing down.. :)

Now they are saying he was killed by a small special ops team in a firefight.

I don't care how it was done, just that it was done.

The folks out here are celebrating with all kinds of fireworks. It is almost like the 4th of July.

Tina, I found your back and forth with Terry very interesting because I am going for a fitting the first week of June. In avery simular way, my guy in northern California is going to actually play nine holes with me first to observe my swing. Then we will do a very simular proccess as yours. Good luck and let us know how the new clubs and fitting help you.

Some people may be smart enough to think about two things or maybe more.
I wouldn't know. I'm not that smart. I can barely remember one thing. LOL

One time I was on a driving range and one of the best golfers in this area was just down from me hitting balls. Another guy walked up to him and asked him what he thought about during his swing.
I stopped and listened intently for some words of wisdom in the answer to come.
All he said in reply was "nothing".

We just went back to hitting balls and pondering.

Surge has mentioned several times that a right handed golfer normally lines up aimed right. Several of our brothers on this blog have talked about the same thing. Just keep working on it and it will come to you. We have all been there, and some of us including me, are still there.

Just wanted to make sure you know what you are doing is "normal." Seems like you are getting it more lined up. I am sure you know how important the mental part of it is. When you start to be more confident with your alignment, it will allow you to relax, and trust yourself more. Then, like Surge likes to say, you will be able to feel the swing and swing the feel.

Spot on Keith
Unfortunately we have people in my country doing similar
Politicians here got into the act just to raise their figures in the polls

Overzealousness strengthening the enemy
Fools dancing on graves, creating future innocent graves
Instant gratification digging holes for those not yet born
Justice should not perpetuate stupidity
Undisciplined hatred reciprocating the same & the cycle continues

I spit on them all for what they do & the world they create for my grandkids

My keyboard has more to say
But enough is enough for today

Bill: Excellent advice From Dick and Amos. One more thing you can do is really, really practice at the range so you have a good "feeling" when toes, knees, hips and shoulders are aligned. Then, when actually playing, you can legally lay a marker (or club) down to establish your toe line (Rule 8-2). But the marker must be removed before you take your swing. After the shot, you can also lay the club at you toe line and recheck your alignment. Personally, I find that the easiest way to establish correct alignment is to do a lot of range work - select many different targets and set up the correct toe alignment using alignment rods. Take the shot, remove the rods and try to make the same shot. Good luck to you and hit 'em straight! R2

From Barry from Brisbane Australia. Don, thanks so much for your daily emails. One picks up vital info from them. If would love it if you would comment on the following. Regarding keeping outwards pressure on the knees in the set-up, I have trouble making this work. Recently I have found that keeping this pressure on throughout the swing until after the impact on the ball, keeps the hips and legs in the athletically ready position throughout the swing and keeps the hips square at impact, and then they release for the follow through. Is this how it should work? Thanks, Barry.

I do something similar for putting. I stand roughly parallel to the aiming linel then hold the club up so the head is over the hole and the handle over the ball, or, if on a gradient, the part of the green I want to aim at. Holding the club in that position I then line my feet up with it. It looks dumb but a 3-putt is a bad day for me. I just wish it didn't take me up to six approach shots to get to the green.

Steve, notice, she said "feels" like it is over the center of head.Which was about the same feeling I got when I made the correction.I'm sure Tina will clarify her remark in due course.
Btw, How did your normal courses fair during the storms, are they still playable? I was headed to the pitch&putt in Morris today but got pleasantly side-tracked.
Glad you & the Missus are back home.

I think you may be onto something. I notice at setup my right arm tends to be higher than my leading left arm resulting in wanting to get too much right hand into the swing and an over the top move in my transition to the FUS.

I went to tne backyard and hit a few balls tucking my right elbow in toward my left at setup.
Just that one thing made it much easier to stay out of the SBG and my T finish was much closer to my left ear. If I maintain a relatively straight left elbow I can only go to what feels like half way as far as the lift goes.

I did notice it eliminated an over the top move and I actually hit some pretty crisp shots. Thinking back, Surge has mentioned in tips rotating the right elbow inward and more upward and finishing the FUS AFAP. Your post just made it all kinda click.

Thanks

Love the 2,000lb No 2 iron. Swinging that one vertical to a weightless top of the backswing would have made darned sure it went straight through the target up to a 'T' Finish and a Recoil.

A real proper swing thought, just like Surge says like "Skipping a Rock"
Now back to Golf, a clean sweep for PING, Westwood, Watson and Maria Hjorth, hmmm!

T. Walsh. You are entitled to your opinion. I believe it to be wrong, but that is my opinion. If you perhaps have a change of heart and are looking for ways to learn the Surge swing and FEEL like you are actually a part of a friendly group of folks wanting the same thing. This is the place to be. You can simply skip over any or all blog comments you find to be off topic. This is just a hint/suggestion, you do not have to read them all. In fact, you do not have to read any. You could just watch the video tips and move on. However, I believe, if you do start participating in some of the friendly conversations and banter, you may actually find that you are enjoying it. Who knows, you yourself may even start feeling like a friend to some of us, or even an actual member of the Surge Nation family. Just give it a chance, and try to play nice with all the others. I guarantee, you will still hear and learn a lot about SSGS being discussed, and may just make a friend or two in the process. Get to know us, and give us a chance to grow on you. We are family.

Quite a while ago I saw something about Freddy Couples' swing and someone said his swing thought either should be, or was, "I .....am Mr. Perfect" spoken or thought from backswing to follow through. I tried it numerous times while thinking about how smoothe Freddy's swing was. I found myself trying to mentally and physically emulate his swing, at least the lovely rhythym he had. Well...I've done the same thing watching the marvelous rhythym and tempo of the Surge's swing. Maybe I ought to use the phrase "Thank..... you .....Don .......Senior!" as I go back to the mitt, up the tree and swing through to the T finish. What do you think folks? Don?

I received tip related to this topic, agreeing with Nicklaus, but taking it one step further. The tip was to try to ser the club contact the ball, even if it isn't possible. For me, it prevents shanks. After a shank, I can often recall the feeling that my head came up way too soon.

Tina, I hope to be seeing John in the near future. I plane on either calling or emailing him tomorrow, in regards to setting a date. How did the fitting go, can you provide any further info on the process as far as procedures and time involved. Did you drive to Sunbury or meet somewhere in the middle. If you drove to him, how is his facilities. Did you hit indoors or outdoors. We are trying to wait on decent weather, but I am getting too anxious. I think I prefer to just go ahead and drive to Sunbury if he has a dry place to hit, out of the possible rain.

Hello Fellow Dodge Ball Fans!

I was going to post an after action report last night, but fell asleep at the keyboard. LOL Here goes.

I played Anchorage Golf Course again yesterday, still on all temps. The driver deserted me and I only hit four fairways. However, My iron play and hybrid play were spot on.

I started with double bogey on the first two holes, as I put my first drive into the woods on the right, and my drive on two into the woods on the left. :( On the third hole, I hit a pitching wedge from the tee. The ball struck a tree limb, kicked off of a small hill which back stopped the green and trickled back down to within three inches of the hole. The putt was a tough one, but I managed a birdie. Bogey on four and five, double bogey on six. Par on seven, eight, nine and ten. Bogey on eleven and double bogey on twelve when I hit a good drive, a nice six iron to thirty feet from the green and then an explosion with my wedge. I skulled the ball and hit it fifty yards past the green. Bogey on thirteen, par on fourteen, fifteen and sixteen. Bogey on seventeen and par on eighteen.

Total for the day, 84! Granted, the round was played on a shortened course with no bunkers in play, but still not a bad round for a DH. :0)

Hit'em Long and Straight,
Bob

I had a similar experience a few years ago "channelling" Ernie Els. Golf Digest has players' swings you can watch, and his was so smooth then - the newer version isn't the same. Of course it isn't a surge swing, but the tempo is the thing.

For the person asking about swing thoughts, the books I've read on the mental game all say it should probably NOT be anything mechanical, but rather focus on rhythm, tempo, etc. "flowing, smooth, etc, and that you visualize something like this as you swing. I make my best swings when I have NO swing thoughts, but it's tough to think about "nothing."

Hi Steve,
Once you get to the toe line, how do you keep your momentum from carrying you into the SBG? I am really struggling with this. If I wait to get to the toe line to start the lifting of the arms, I'm dead, and a slice results EVERY time.
So far I feel like that lifting starts VERY early in order for me to have any chance of getting vertical. Thoughts you or anyone else has on this are most appreciated!
thanks,

For the Tech Guys and others in the Surge Nation, before I nip off and watch the highlights of the Zurich final round.
Today's Pop up Video was smoother and better than the first trial Beta one. BIG SMILE FROM ME.
Hope things are settling down for Steve, Kevin and all the others in devastated areas.
My Kiwi golf mate played on Saturday, the first hour in frost, with tight fairways and the sun low in their eyes. Not a good day for him on 102 [usually mid 80's].
It reminded me of a GRIP TIP for playing in the wet. Someone posted that cotton gloves give a good grip in wet weather. A few days ago we bought a pack of cotton gloves at Metro in Dalian. The frosty comments reminded me.So I grabbed the nearest club, Mizuno 5Wood and ran the grip under the tap in the bathroom for a while. Then out to the golf mat and swung away after going through my set up routine [GBSAPS]. Absolutely perfect, NO SLIPPAGE at all. I noted that the gloves are "Interlocked cotton Gloves,Mild PVC dots palm" Their words not mine.
On the palm side of them there are tiny PVC dots. I thought they might slip on the grips, not so. They were very comfortable.
Just thought I would pass that on seeing I can.
Might try them on putting next and see how they perform.

Loved the video, played straight through, whereas the first one was stop start stop.
Count down to NZ started in earnest.

Dick, hope the ribs are behaving. On your, "I am positive I am going to screw this up." reminded me of the tip Surge gave:"Focus on where you want the ball to go, not on where you don't want it to go."
I am positive I am not going to screw this up! Hahahaha.
Whoever posted on the original Broadway version of Oklahoma, and the singer Howard Keel. He like Gordon McCrae [Roy Orbison, Glenn Cambell etc] was one of my favourites. The 'Talent' we have foisted on us today, ie, (c)Rap etc, doesn't even come close.
Thankyou who ever you were. Dragonhead, in a warming Dalian,China.

Thanks to all!
I just went down in the basement to my range mat and mirror (there ARE advantages to being "petite") and just practiced that move: the toe to 9:00 and then the lift, checking each time in the mirror until I could get to 12:00 and NOT in the SBG, then put it together in some slow swings, again checking in the mirror each time. WOW does that feel different than what I was doing! :) Feels like the club is literally over the center of my head. So that's going to be my "feel" thought.
Hopefully I can take that to the range this week and then the golf course.
Thanks again to all - will let you know how it goes! :) :) :)
