Mike, from Ireland, said he got in the catcher's mitt and up the tree in the backswing, but was having trouble understanding where the hands were supposed to be in the downswing. Good question Mike. Fortunately, the answer is quite simple.
The hands are on the same plane going up and coming down. Think of that pane of glass resting in my shoulder. In the backswing and forward upswing the hands remain on that pane of glass. The club, at the top of the backswing, comes off the plane slightly, but the hands remain.
If you make the motion with your back arm of skipping a rock across a pond you can get the correct feel. And think of this, the palms of your hands remain perpendicular to the ground throughout the swing. There is just one plane for the hands.
Keep it vertical,
The Surge!

Not a "fatal flaw". Some may not be able to get their hands that high, either from physical limitations or from just not being good enough to control the shots from that high. DJ is even much higher than Don.
Keep in mind that Don is very good and DJ is very, very good.
If you try to force your hands to a higher position than you are comfortable with you will probably lose much more than you would gain by losing other aspects of the swing such as balance and posture.
Even Don and DJ would not have the hands anywhere near that high when hitting certain less than full shots and yet the basic mechanics are the same and still work fine from a lower position at the top.

I have a question from the video. Several times during the video, Don demonstrates the finish of the swing. To my eye, his back is in a reverse C position. If your head and upper body are tilted back at impact as he shows, I think, when you swing up to the finish, that you end up with your back in that reverse C position. Hello back pain. Are we supposed to straighten up, that is move the upper body to a more upright position, during the finish or do we remain in the slight reverse C ending?

Take a page from my personal "life experiences" and don't practice this drill across a pond or stream from a house that has a lot of windows.ÃÂ No one told me that when I was a kid.ÃÂ That one cost me a good beating from my old man and a full day of work at the house in question to pay for the window.

I actually agree with you in
I actually agree with you in that I see virtually no difference in getting to 12 o'clock vertical at the top (as viewed down-the-line) and then getting slightly laid off at the beginning of the downswing, versus just getting to slightly laid off at the top and starting the downswing from there.ÃÂ In fact, I think the latter is probably easier to do and doesn't require the fighting of the tendency to lay off slightly that Surge advocates.ÃÂ I also find it a strain on my shoulders to get to perfectly vertical.
I think the key to all this is the phrase "slightly laid off."ÃÂ I would suggest that this means no more laid off than 11 o'clock which is still within the parameters of a vertical swing according to Surge.
I know this works for me and leads to greater consistency and power than trying to get to 12 o'clock.

You could try teeing it a little lower, or be very assiduous about hovering the driver behind the teed-up ball at the correct height for where you want to swing through. Personally, I never ground my driver behind the ball on the tee, as I don't want the club coming through too low. I always hover at the height of the ball.

Thanks Surge for everything
Thanks Surge for everything that you have shared with us.
I want to share something that is not in regards to your daily video.ÃÂ To my fellow Surge students, please forgive me if this all sounds too familiar and has been mentioned before.
I've been working on the Surge swing for over a year now and normally my 6-iron was good for about 130 yards.ÃÂ I've been paying attention to Surge's daily videos, and to many of the comments of you fellow students of his swing, and also reading some of the golfing magazines that I've been receiving a complimentary subscription to; and I think I've come up with a combination of tweaks that I learned /read about that may have added 20 to 30 yards to my swing just within the last couple of weeks.
1. For me, my feet are splayed out at about a 45 degree angle and the heels are anything from 1/2 to 4 inches apart.ÃÂ Note that I am 6 feet tall and I have a lean build.ÃÂ If I use that setup in my stance, lightly clasping my hands together while pretending to hold a club, and gently swinging 30 degrees to the left and to the right (like a pendulum) then I feel my lower to mid back has minimum tension in its muscles.ÃÂ If I use the the "suggested" 20 to 30 degree flairing out of my feet then I feel my lower to mid back tightening up when I do my little swing test.
2. I read in Golf Magazine about relaxing your shoulders and neck area for maximum driving distance and I am incorporating that in my swing.
3. I am using a grip pressure that is the same as when I am holding a pencil or pen.
I am most intrigued with my feet flair angle and how it seems to be affecting my back muscles.ÃÂ I am not a doctor and so I have no idea how it all works.ÃÂ I don't recall the Surge making note of tension in your back muscles affecting your swing and whether it is better to have relaxed back muscles, somewhat tense back muscles, or something else.ÃÂ Please note that I do not mean sloppy posture either.
I am experimenting with different widths between my feet because I think that a combination of the correct flair, correct feet gap, and the signature Surge wide knees should "automatically" set me up to feel the pressure on the soles of my feet to be centered below your arches, as the Surge recommends.
The feet positioning was based purely on my own physique and I am sure it will differ for each individual.
Any thoughts on this?

Keith, sounds like you're
Keith, sounds like you're suffering from similar swing ailments as myself. I had great improvements on the range yesterday by working on two simple aspects of Surginomics. One, I reviewed the "master set up" video so I had my right shoulder soft and down while my right forarm was in that recomended position. Two, my wife pointed out to me that I was well inside of the mit and parallel to my right foot too early. In other words I was maybe a foot or more too far inside of the ideal mit position on my BUS. This put me back in the SBG at the top and in an impossible position to get back on plane. If you read my post from yesterday you'll see the fix including the thought on the video taping we did. So with the master set up and getting into the mit correctly, this helped me get into a better position at the top and you guessed it, I started hitting the ball straight and long.
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ Sometimes the fixes are fairly easy IF we can see the proof on film. Then we can move toward the cure.
Don't get confused into
Don't get confused into thinking Surge is talking about a move like you see from Ryan Moore or Jim Furyk. He says that the club tries to move itself into a laid off position at the transition and we should resist that. It creates a little flex but we do not let the club actually get back behind the ankles as Moore does.
As for your problem with the weak slice and "fixing" it by flattening your plane a little, I think you really need to get video of what you're doing and/or get a Swing Surgeon certified instructor to work with you. Most likely you were starting your transition with the upper body, getting yourself outside the line coming into impact. Your "correction" is basically to aim your upper body right of your lower body so that when you make that move with the upper body first, it brings you close to on-the-line rather than out-to-in. The proper solution is to start the FUS with the weight shift from your back foot to your front foot while keeping your head as still as possible. That creates the bump and the secondary spine tilt and brings you through in the slot.

This is bringing back a flood of memories along that line.ÃÂ Yes, harness straps hurt like heck.ÃÂ One of my favorite stories about doing something that you think can't happen involved my first experience with a bow and arrows.ÃÂ We had an old barn beside the house.ÃÂ Dad always parked his car in there.ÃÂ Like a lot of old barns, there were 1/2" gaps between the side boards.ÃÂ I think you know where this going.ÃÂ I put my big bulls eye target on the side of the barn.ÃÂ I shot a couple of arrows and they stuck right in the boards behind the target.ÃÂ After a couple of shots, one just went through the target and disappeared.ÃÂ I wish I had never found it.ÃÂ But alas, I did.ÃÂ It went right through the driver's side door of dad's car.ÃÂ That would have been bad enough, but it got worse.ÃÂ The window was down at the time.ÃÂ I worked a good part of the summer for free that year.ÃÂ That one got me the razor sharpening strap.ÃÂ That strap was saved for the really big stuff.ÃÂ Looking back now, I guess I would have to agree with dad, that was a pretty big one.
Do you see a trend here?
I told dad that I had to learn how to shoot a bow because I am 1/8 Cherokee.ÃÂ He reminded me that he was 1/4 Cherokee, and then went on the war path on my butt.ÃÂ I think he finally stopped when he smelled burning flesh and saw that he was sending up smoke signals.
Darn, those were the good old days.ÃÂ I miss that man so much.

I have noticed the same thing with the feet "flare" - close to 45 degrees... it gives me the "wide knees" feel & seems to help control my backswing to "stay out of" the Sacred Burial Ground. On this video,ÃÂ Don mentions a loop that must take placeÃÂ to get get back on plane.ÃÂ
That's Correct. When you are vertical, it must take place. (At 3:40 mark of this video.)
So, we want "fewer angles" to keep it simple, yes?
I come back to this question: ÃÂ into and at the top of the backswing...
why notÃÂ be SLIGHTLY LAID OFF? ÃÂ (Hi Doc...we've explored thisÃÂ
before and I'm still trying to understand. Thanks for your patience)
SLO is still a very light club that is already pretty much ON plane when starting the FUS.
Simple: No loops, No new angles, and On plane. (Just don't let the club get away from you...that can happen with either scenario.)
OK Nation, thanks for your input.

I don't disagree with you because I hit a lot of really good shots from about an 11:00 position. Of course I hit a lot of good shots from a 12:00 to 12:05 position also. The key to any of them for me is to let the hands start back down toward the toe line and not swing from the top.

Hello to ALL SURGE-ites :
Hello to ALL SURGE-ites :
ÃÂ ÃÂ today was "the wrost of times(front nine) - and the best of times (back nine)ÃÂ AKA "who knows what evil lies in a golfer's swing?ÃÂ the SHADOW does -- and he tells ALL"
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ I started off hitting the ball solid and reasonably long -- but every thing was left, left, and more left!ÃÂ Foruttanetly I was playing for the right center of most most fairways, so I found myself palying from the extreme left edge of most fairways - but the approaches, chips and putts -- not even close!ÃÂ ÃÂ Shot an opening nice of 53 -- that has to beÃÂ my highest score in at least a year!ÃÂ
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ After I had exhausted all the usual "quick fixes" - checks on grip, posture, stance, alignment etc on the 10th tee I noticed that the sun was finally in a favorable postion for the "Shadow test" -- and EUREKA! There is was -- my head was wigggling around like a "Bobble hesad" doll!!ÃÂ 2 more practice swings with the shadow - and a rock steady head.ÃÂ Went to the tee and hit the longest highest and straightest Drive of the day -- I swear to within a foot of the target line and nearly 200 yards.ÃÂ ÃÂ And so it went for the rest of the back nine.ÃÂ It must have looked like a "OK whoa re you ? and what have you done with Amos?"
ÃÂ ÃÂ after my customary bogies on 10 and 11 (they are both two long me to get pars very often) it was time "to go work" on the "reverse Amen corner"ÃÂ (I really need a better name for that stretch of holes - the 4 "easiest" on the course - I considered "the Happy Hunting gorund" but that is too long and it might offend the Native Americans -- we MUST be politically correct at all times ;<).
ÃÂ ÃÂ And go to work I did -- parred all 4 of them - 2 GIR and 2 nearly perfect chips for tap-ins of less than a foot.ÃÂ Bogies on 16 and 17 and aÃÂ par on 18 resutled in a back nine 40 --- tied my "personal best" for about the 4th or 5th time on that side.
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ noteÃÂ to Steve Smith -- after that front nine, I think the Vewgas odds fell to about 1/4 to 1 !ÃÂ but after the back nine it may be back to about 1 to 1ÃÂ ROFLOL!
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ final results :
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ hit 12 of 14 fairways = but many on the front nine were in the wrong place - making a more difficult approach
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ 2 GirÃÂ --ÃÂ both in the back nine
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ 30 puttsÃÂ and at leastÃÂ 4 or maybe 5 "near chip ins" for putts of less than a foot -- make that about 1 1/2" on 18 !
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ 6 bunkers -- 5 on the front nine
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ 5 pars (all in the back nine)
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ 9 bogies
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ 2 double bogies, 1 triple and 1 "other" - and 8 on the par 4 First hole.ÃÂ I seem to find more ways to mess up that hole than you can imagine -- -- and it should be such an easy bogie hole with an occasional par.
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ Score: 53 + 40 = 93
ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ Oh well -- Friday is another day!ÃÂ ÃÂ ÃÂ And ANY day on the golf course with fresh air and sunshine beats the H*** out of sitting home !!

Armand,
Armand,
In a perfect Surge Swing, the swing would be perfectly vertical - perpendicular to the ground. The line from the shoulders to the hands defines the vertical plane. At set-up, one establishes an angle (when looking down the toe-line) between the forearms and the club shaft. Ideally, as one makes the backswing, the hands go on a vertical plane, presuming that the spine angle is maintained throughout.
Most of us - dare I say all - are not perfect, even Don. As a result, our "vertical ferris wheel" is slightly off kilter - maybe 15* tilt. I, for one, find it quite difficult to consistently visualize an 15* tilt. I can, however, visualize vertical and end up on a 15* tilt. Surge teaches an idealized swing that we should get as close to as our individual abilities allow us.
The concepts of the Swing Surgeon Golf Swing are 100% scientifically valid. My ability to achieve that 100% valid swing concept is far less than 100%. We each do the best we can while striving for perfection in everything; golf and life.
May you get maximum enjoyment in both.

Nice deal, Robert. I bet she gives you a family discount on coaching rates. Better not let Surge certify her or you won't be able to afford the sessions.
Hi Dave,
Hi Dave,
You should not finish and stay in a reverse C position. There are a couple things in the Surge Swing to note that prevent this. One, at impact you should pop-tart up AFAP (as fast as possible). Essentially Surge is saying with that to release all of the held energy of the swing and keeping the swing center behind the ball through the moment of impact. That full release helps in generating the power of the swing. Second, when you reach the T-Finish, you recoil and relax in a straight standing position on the outside of your forward foot facing the target. The recoil and relax keeps you out of that reverse C. For a moment at the end of the swing, the momentum may pull your shoulders back behind your hips if you swing really hard, but you'll finish standing up after the recoil.
