I was asked to explain what the proper amount of knee bend should look like in the Surge Swing. Your legs are your foundation, so it's important to have all the right elements in place before you take a swing.
As you'll see in the video, I like to use the accordion example of how the shoulders and knees go down together when setting up to the ball. Don't overdo it though or you might end up hurting your back and your golf game.
On another note, I just want to say that I appreciate all of the feedback and comments that are posted daily. It's really great to see and motivates me to keep on helping you cut strokes and shoot those lower scores!
Keep it vertical,
The Surge!

Robert and SG,
Robert and SG,
When I get my knees directly over my ankles, which is where Surge says they should be, I also find my weight on the outside edges of my feet. I, however, know the reason - both ankles have been broken in the past (long past) and never healed properly. As a result, I don't have the necessary ankle flexibility to keep my feet flat with the knees pressed outward.
SG, a lack of ankle flexibility could be your problem to find out which it is, you need to either have someone look at you in the face-on view or use a full-length mirror to check your stance. If you are pushing your knees too far outward it will be obvious. If flexibility is the issue, you will notice the weight move to the outside edges before your knees get over your ankles. Good luck.

I loved San Diego. I spent 3 wonderful months there on vacation. I was there from October 7 to December 31, 1975. I got plenty of sun and really just relaxed. Well, actually I was there studying at MCRD San Diego. MCRD stands for Marine Corps Recruit Depot. It was a tough 3 months, but the weather was great.
Have not been back since then. Guess I did not leave anything that I wanted bad enough to go back. Maybe one day I will come back again. Once the nightmares stop.
Feel the swing, swing the feel,

Janet & Cerv,
Janet & Cerv,
Small world we live in,isn't it? I went to high school in Fallbrook, eons ago,of course. I came back home to Alabama in late '77.
Cerveza,
Cerveza,
Surge did talk about this a bit especially in the video about getting to the outside of the left foot (I think that was originally posted back on the old site, but it's in the archives here, as well). My understanding (and the professionals can correct any errors I make) is that your weight should be centered on your back foot (right for a right hander) at setup and into the back swing--not allowing the weight outside the back foot but really centered on it. The bump shifts your weight from the back foot rolling to the front foot and onto the outer edge of that foot. For people with the physical capability, you should end with your left foot up on edge so that the inner part of the sole of your left shoe (again, for right handed players--lefties would be on their right foot) is off the ground. The right foot is on its toe and is really just a balance point. Almost no weight should remain on it after impact.

I hate it when they turn the lights on in a bar at the end of the night. I used to look over at whoever I was sitting with and go "Nope, I ain't that drunk yet", and go home alone again.
Glad I don't do that stuff anymore.

Tech Guys don't know why this is????!!!! Can watch the videos after over six months of not being able too, can click and register "Like", but try reply or leave a comment, and it is nada, zilch, ling, sufir, null, nowt!!
Swinging for the first time today indoors, and it is so easy to forget the things you did previously.First forgot 'heavy right' then, me of all people, FUS. GBSAPS you buttock!
Used to set up rocking backwards and fwds to centre the weight on the arches. So keen to swing again, it all went out of the window!!! razzle, frazzle, dazzle @#$%.
So back to the drawing board and in no time back to normal. Lest We Forget!
Cervaza Fria Good Luck with the exams and the wind down to becoming a golfer again ; - ) PS. The last time I had a cold beer was on the day I was giving the 'bird' to the guards in North Korea across the Yahu River at Dandong on the China/DPRK border[Naughty me]. Drank a HUGE amount and spent 6 hours being driven back to Dalian, hiccupping all the way. Never touched a drop since hahahaha. [over 7years ago : - ] First at work the following morning and a legend was born. They had never seen anyone drink so much while chug-a-lugging [me a beer against two,ie, I drank two to their one ]and drank them both under the table. They couldn't believe I was there first at work. They didn't believe they would see me that day! Woosies, hahahaha.

I also recall plying a super executive course in Van Nuys with a great resturant/lounge called the "Golden Bull". My first Christmas from my new bride was a lovely Turguiose Blu glof bag bought at the pro shop there for the then princely sum of $75 -- couldn't match it today for $300 -- maybe not even $400

Right on, Surge. too much of the instruction on the knee bend has one squatting with the but out as if you were assuming a sitting position. Almos impossible to keep in balance there.
Not if the club is properly
Not if the club is properly fitted for you. That's really the point of a fitting--to build the club to your swing so you don't try to build your swing to the club (which could then vary from club to club and get you in all kinds of messes).

I think you already have some grass.
I don't know how long you have been watching Surge on his back porch. But, that is the first post you have done on this blog. Why was it so important to post a goodbye to us, when you have never posted a single thing on this blog before?
I guess you must be making a "big" point by saying goodbye when none of us ever knew you were even here.

Sorry for the mix-up. Thanks for the geography lesson. Some of places you and CervezaFria metnioned sure sounded like the San Fernando Valley area that I lived in previously. I think the reference to Edwards was the final mind bender-- I was thinking Edwards AF base -- Norh East of Burbank in the Mojave desert.
But after the "magic shaft" fiasco, how could I ever forget that you are in San Diego!
Only been in San Diego once in my life for a one day business trip.
My last job at LearJet in Wichita, KS, at least half of the Engineering staff were ex-San Diegans -- and all were looking forward to returning to SD.

Surge, I'm repeating myself
Surge, I'm repeating myself but I haven't seen or heard an answer from you as yet. When you are giving instructions on the back porch in regard to say, a question about the legs, and you simply swing your arms back and forth as though you were going to hit the ball, you always show a big wrist cock. I know you don't think this matters since you are not demonstrating the actual swing ,but I believe it gives a false impression of what the actual swing should look like with straight arms with no wrist cock. I believe you should be consistent with the picture we students want to pattern our swing after. What do you think? Bob Miner

Seems to work fine in either direction, "O -Sama, O Bama" or "O Bama O Sama" on a 3-1 cadence,ie "O Sama O--Bama" works very well and an easy one to remember.
Might be one of the most useful things they have both done,ie, donated their names to REAL Golfers.

Ah Saritas! Great food! My son turned me on to it a few years ago, but I always forget about going there. I usually go the other direction to Hilberto's or Las Parillas.
Are you done with finals yet?
Well, I guess it will be OK!
Well, I guess it will be OK! I just got in/back from my fitting with John in Sunbury. Five hours of driving the truck and 3 hours of driving balls. We did, drivers, hybrids, FWs, irons and wedges. Now comes the sticker shock, when I see the estimate for a complete set. I thought I was making a decent vertical swing. It was pretty ugly, and not very vertical after all. I'm going to have to work on the butt on the wall drill with my swingrite.
Yes. I will start the bar
Yes. I will start the bar preparation course a week from Monday. However, for one week I will not be doing anything besides spend time with my family, golf, and play Halo. It is going to be great.
Steve: I'll bet Doc could
Steve: I'll bet Doc could just reshaft your KZG head. Or, you could have him make you a whole new driver. Either way, a long-distance fitting works super-well. Doc even make me 4 new hybrids (5,6,7,8) and they are just awesome, too. Don't know how the man does it, but he is GOOD!!! Anyway, good to hear from you and hit 'em straight! R2
ps; whenever I reply directly to my "Disqus notification" e-mail, some sort of third-party notice attaches itself to my posts. Any idea how I can get rid of it? Just wondering. R2

Surge I was very pleased to be able to meet you at Quail Hollow on Thursday. Also very excited about DJ's play, as I followed him for most of his first nine on the back. I learned more about the vertical swing as I watched him play. I was also very impressed with that bunker shot on 17.

Janet, I'm agreeing with you,
Janet, I'm agreeing with you, it's a crock. I'm sure Doc will give a reply when he reads this post as well. Eons ago when I had gotten a new set of clubs, I had to wait 24 hours to play them, allowing the glue to set in the hosel, other than that I was good to go. If you had get used to it or learn to hit it as your friend claims, this would mean you had to develop a new swing for that particular club and as we all know, you carry 14 clubs but carry only one swing. Another point is this, if that were true then why do all the major club makers have equipment trailers at all the PGA stops where they can build replacement clubs for the pros.
Happy golfing,
Boog

It can be difficult to stop doing some to the things we have done for our whole life with the rotational swing. If you use the search feature on the right side of the blog, you can find daily videos to help you with the knees, hips, and alignment.
That is where I would start.

As Simply golf stated below, there are several differences. Alot of the similarities are actually the way he layed out his web site and the "10 free" lessons etc. He obviously copied alot of what has worked for Don as far as marketing and use of the web. This is flattering but there are lots of differences as far as the swing and methods.

I think the important point
I think the important point is that the centre line of balance which is between, and parallel to, the toe line and heel line should pass through the arches of the feet. It could be argued that the optimum position of the club at the top of the backswing is directly over and inline with the centre line of balance and could be deemed as the point separating being laid off or crossed over.
In regards to the effect of the outward pressure of the knees I feel it does shift some weight to the outside edges of the feet but not enough to feel that my ankles are going to roll over.
regards, Craig S

The names of cities in California all kind of sound the same. They take a normal sounding town name and add a little Spanish influence, so we have lots of places named stuff like "Rancho Riverdale."
When I moved here, I thought I would stay for maybe two or three years and then go back home. Well, one ex-husband and a passel of kids later, here I am. I've found we kind of make our own little secure world of friends and family no matter where we live. Home is home.

I have found that 3 swings
I have found that 3 swings will tell you if the club fits you. There will be a short break in period mentally until you trust the club will do what you tell it to do.
