Remember to Protect Yourself from the Elements

Thu, 04/07/2011 - 20:32 -- Don Trahan

Since we all play the game of golf, it's important to remember that being out in the sun all day can have a negative effect if you don't take the proper precautions. I, for one, have taken steps to ensure that my face, neck, and other areas exposed during a round of golf are fully protected from the sun's rays.

One of these steps was to start wearing a full brimmed hat. I used to wear a visor every time I played, but unfortunately it did not protect my whole face, most notably the sides near my cheeks. I have had a few procedures as a result, and now I try to protect my whole face by wearing these types of hats.

However, what was good for my skin was not good for my game. Because of that hat being so wide, I was knocking it off of my head after I recoiled from my T-finish. Subconsciously, I started getting wider at my finish, to avoid knocking the hat on the ground. This was not good, and so when I finally realized it, I simply started taking off the hat before each shot and then I put it right back on when I'm finished.

So make sure you are protecting yourself out there. Whether it's wearing sunblock, a wide brimmed hat, or sunglasses, we all need to take care of ourselves so we can keep coming back to play the game we love.

Keep it vertical,

The Surge!

Hey, Surge
Did you consider a Auzzi hat that clips up on one side? You can clip it up when you swing and unclip it when you are done. Might work.

Enjoyed your lesson about protecting ourselves from the sun with Hats. However I noticed that the hat you were wearing seemed to have very small holes in the rim. I could see the tree through the rim of the hat. If in fact this is true the hat you were wearing does not block UVA and UVB from your face. The hat needs to have a solid material under the rim to block out the UVA and UVB.

I say all this because I checked out all the material on hats about 14 years ago when I had to have my nose and half of my right cheek removed due to skin cancer. I had facial reconstruction and radiation treatments to prevent the return of that cancer. I do wear sunscreen every day and a hat to protect my face when out working or playing.

Hope this helps someone to prevent or reduce the chance of skin cancer.

I have not seen any response to the above message I put on this sight about 2 months ago??
Does anyone care about SKIN CANCER and how to Protect yourself???
Your HAT must block the UVA and UVB. Use your SPF 40 plus and wear the hat!!

The rhythm is all wrong for golf with a mariachi band. No wonder they got upset with you. Next time try rhumba. Much better for golf.

Thank you for the re-posting, I had not seen the original due to my working out of town the last 3 months. In a land with no wi-fi or internet connection, I might add.Skin cancer is and should be a major concern for all that play sports and or work outdoors, I fall into both categories at different times.I try to protect myself as much as possible with the appropriate sun screen/block.

It is good to hear from you my friend. I am from the hills. We don't have seas up here. I don't like going into the ocean because there are animals in there that look at me like I look at a chicken sandwich.

Thanks for you prayers. I will keep you and your wee mum in mine as well. I guess it is always a matter of when not if. It has been said we start dying the second we are born. That is why I feel blessed to have had a great full life with so many great people in it. I count you and all my brothers and sisters in the Surge Nation amongst that group.

Like the song says, "It is not the moments we live, it is the moments that take your breath away." I don't want to leave this earth with any regrets.

I am blessed, therefore I am,

Thanks pal. We were able to talk with KP today and let him know what is going on. He let us know later that he has talked to his boss to let him know what is going on too. That way all the stuff can be in place if he needs to come home quickly. KP and I have a great relationship and I let him know I will do whatever it takes to help his dad out.

Thanks for your thoughts, and also for your service.

Very important message, thanks Surge. I am also a big proponent of protecting the face with a good sunscreen and a nice widebrim straw hat. I also wear glasses with transitions lenses. What i don't like doing is taking off my hat and then having to look into the sun for my shot, so after I put down my hat I have a visor, hooked to my push cart or umbrella, that I slip on for my shot and replace it with my wide brim hat the rest of the time. It's a good system.

A couple of things on the hat: If you care about the shape do not lay a wide brimed hat down on the brim. Any cowboy will tell you to always lay them down on the crown, otherwise you will eventually ruin the brim. Straw allows air flow, but you may have less problem with a wide brimmed cloth hat where the brim is not as stiff and will give and bend with the shaft of your club. You can find cloth hats with some open air meshing and you can also wet the material; an extra benefit if playing in a hot arid environment. Sweat stained? Throw it in the wash. Just don't put it in the dryer and not a bad idea to either stuff the crown with towels when air drying, or wear it on you head as it drys to keep it from shrinking.

Mid 1970's visited NZ for the first time. Was there for 3 weeks acclimatizing myself from a Scottish Winter in Inverness, to the mid summer temperatures in Auckland. Every day out on the sunlounger, sun cream on and half an hour in the sun.
Up to the Bay of Islands. Crossing from Paihi to Russell on the ferry. The journey is less than 15 minutes. In that time, I was burnt to a crisp, literally. After a couple of years in Libya, parading and playing tennis, in 48degC heat, I thought NZ would be a breeze. Not so!It is something to do, I believe, with the angle the sun strikes the country [being at such a low latitude],way down under! I remember hopping from skinny tree to skinny tree, trying to find shade. For a couple of nights I stood in my underpants in the doorway of the lounge to allow the cool draught [no aircon] to cool me. Never again.

On the taboos Jackoz, In Germany my ex-Kiwi wife, then my girl-friend, was wearing slacks and I had on a kilt. I was a Sgt at the time. A Warrant Officer leaned across the bar, and said, "I say, I say, I say, I see your good lady has on trousers and you have on a skirt, who wears the pants in your relationship?" My girl-friend held my hand so tightly, I nigh on dislocated my right shoulder, attempting to take a swing at him. Just as well.Perhaps in hindsight that was the start of the problems with my right shoulder? Hmmmmm never thought of that ; - ) There is another taboo in there somewhere.

Oh and don't go into a Sydney bar like one of our Military Police did. At the time he was in the Merchant Navy. He started singing in a drunken state, "Take these chains from my....", which was followed by his collecting a plate glass window. Well deserved.
Looking forward to the All Blacks and the Wallabies, locking horns in the Rugby World Cup. Always worth the occasion.

We don't have accents down here but we still can't understand each other (chuckles)
The hat style you refer to is called a slouch hat

While the topic is health issues - here's one that could save some lives
Every country has things of symbolic sacredness
If you have a death wish, roll into a country Oz pub (not a pretty boutique city pub) & make fun of the slouch hat
Darkness & death will descend upon you - I kid you not
There are some of us that will fill the room full of uppercuts till our arms fall off
The upside is, the sun will never cause you skin cancer ever again
Today, I kid you not

There is a jovial breed of Aussies & Kiwis that you should not mess with about such things
Poke fun at a Maori's tattoos - Darkness & death will be your best friends

I dismount & here endeth the health warning - I return to my normal stupidity

Happy golfing folks

Good post and valid points.

My father used to say that is what wash and wear meant.

I always lay my hat down upside down. I don't wear my cowboy hat on the course, but I have been looking for a pair of boots with cleats on them.

The points Surge made today have been recognized by farmers and people who work live stock for a very long time. The cowboy hat was never intended to look good. It is a working hat. It's job is to keep the sun and rain off you. It is very effective for that. I always get a chuckle when I see a drug store cowboy wearing his brand new hat and thinking it makes him fit in with the guys with worn jeans, dusty boots and hats that looks like they have been run over a few times. It don't have to look pretty, just work.

Good to hear from you,
Dick

No one has offered any advice on how I can avoid pushing or slicing long clubs, while trying to hit the mitt and go up the tree, but our "best ball foursome" managed to shoot par today with one bogie one birdie and the rest pars. Course 'best ball" play eliminated a lot of my bad shots.
Any comment Surge?
