Remember to Protect Yourself from the Elements

Thu, 04/07/2011 - 20:32 -- Don Trahan

Since we all play the game of golf, it's important to remember that being out in the sun all day can have a negative effect if you don't take the proper precautions. I, for one, have taken steps to ensure that my face, neck, and other areas exposed during a round of golf are fully protected from the sun's rays.

One of these steps was to start wearing a full brimmed hat. I used to wear a visor every time I played, but unfortunately it did not protect my whole face, most notably the sides near my cheeks. I have had a few procedures as a result, and now I try to protect my whole face by wearing these types of hats.

However, what was good for my skin was not good for my game. Because of that hat being so wide, I was knocking it off of my head after I recoiled from my T-finish. Subconsciously, I started getting wider at my finish, to avoid knocking the hat on the ground. This was not good, and so when I finally realized it, I simply started taking off the hat before each shot and then I put it right back on when I'm finished.

So make sure you are protecting yourself out there. Whether it's wearing sunblock, a wide brimmed hat, or sunglasses, we all need to take care of ourselves so we can keep coming back to play the game we love.

Keep it vertical,

The Surge!

Hey Lynn: Doc Griffin and I are working on getting you that extra 30 yards with the hat and sunscreen, but I've heard there's someone in San Diego that already has done it - stand by for news. R2

Great to hear from you up there in the land of the midnight sun. Thanks for your prayers.

As always, thanks for your service. Our youngest son, KP is a staff sgt in the USAF. I am proud of my time in the Corps, but more proud to be an Army dad and an Air Force dad. Those of you who have served and especially those who have kids and grandkids in the military know how proud we are of our boys. When I look at our boys and all the men and women who serve today, my heart just melts. It is good to know there are still people who care enough about our nation and all of us to stand tall and do the right thing. It gives me hope for this country, in spite of what the news would tell us about the young people of this generation. Every generation has accepted the torch when it was our turn, and passed it on to the next.

This is just another reminder that nothing on earth lasts long and as one of the other brothers on the blog wrote to me earlier, we have to make the most of our time while we can.

It has been a long day, and a tiring night. I am finally worn out enough to fall into bed and pass out. Tomorrow, or as it is now later today, will be a long one.

Thanks my brothers for you thoughts and prayers. I hold you all in much esteem. I am turning off the only light still on in Oklahoma and going to bed.

I will check in with you and keep you posted.

God bless you all,
Dick

Hi Surge, maybe this would help in your hat dilema, have you tried placing velcro of a matching color on your brim, and the top side of your hat. This way all you need to do is push the brim up to the other piece of velcro, looking like an Aussie hat. Once done pull the brim down and your set togo.

Good Luck and thanks for all the tips, Your E-student Dave

I used to have one of those Aussie hats the other guy and I were talking about down below. They work great, and look cool. I had to be careful to not start talking with an accent when I was wearing it.

Hope you had a great day.

Lynn & R2, A little unknown fact about the Harvey family. A female member of the GB Royals Tater family was in love with and going to marry the son of Paul many years back. The Royals forbid the marriage and went to great lengths to make sure it never took place. They could not tolerate a Royal Tater being married to the son of a common-tater. Yuk,Yuk

KennyPl Have always loved Latin American music, don't know why.I was entertained at a cocktail party for MP's and bigwigs on the Ecuadorean Navy Training [Sailing]Ship Guayas in NZ. One of the officers who escorted a bus load of them to our establishment, where I gave the opening address in Spanish, turned out to have the same family name as mine [Spanish equivalent]. So I was invited to attend. They had a dance band playing music.I was asked if I had any musical requests. The first was one of many, 'La Bamba'. That woke up the proceedings, and a staid cocktail party, became a real party hahahaha.

One song which haunts me, was from a movie I saw decades ago. A beautiful, quiet rythm [Forgive me if this is misspelt], the song and melody were, "O Ganganchero" The Bandits.

I am still chuckling at the mariachi band.

Thanks coach.

You crack me up. I guess this proves the old saying. Be careful what you ask for, you just might get it. Haha.

The group on here would be a great bunch to go on a scavenger hunt with. There is nothing you folks can't find.

I should buy them. Next time I go to play when they ask if I am walking or need a cart, I could just say nope, I am riding. I mean really riding. I hope the folks behind me don't mind an extra "hazard" or two in the fairways after I pass through. Then they would have to post signs "All horses return to trail" and "No horses on greens." It should help to keep the rough under control.

Surge,

Very timely advice. I am sorry to admit I'm not always careful when it comes to using sunscreen. Not a good thing for someone who gets an Irish tan when the weather starts to get warmer. A visit to my dermatologist is also not a bad idea. Now to go find a sunscreen and a hat that will give me 30 more yards.

Seriously, great advice from a man who cares.

That is funny. Glad it works for you. I will always be a big fan of his. He was from a time when those guys had class. Not many of his breed left.

I think a lot of people were conceived during his show.

Thank you. The prayers of a righteous man avails much.

You know where my peace and comfort comes from. I am sure He is the same place you draw the strength to get up every day and tend to the duties and responsibilities you have.

Roy I don't remember if I have ever told you how much I respect you for what you do everyday with tending to your soul mate. If I didn't, I am sorry. I know from personal experience how hard it is watch a loved one slip away a bit at a time. It says so much about the kind of man you are. With all you have going on, you still find time to come on here and support the Surge Nation. This blog and family would not be the same without guys like you.

Good night my friend. I am going to get some sleep, and hopefully some rest, so I can get up in a few hours and start the whole thing over again.

I think you'd want to be sure they were distortion free and provided UV protection, but I doubt Surge would go into specific brands. You also would want to be sure that they're not going to move around. That's if you're actually wearing them while hitting. Even with my prescription sunglasses, I've never been as comfortable hitting balls as I am with my regular glasses, so I don't use them.

We all moan and complain from time to time about our game. Then we get news like yours that makes us stop and put things into perspective. I mentioned to you yesterday that your rounds with dad would be something you'll always remember. None of us know when the game will be over, so cherish every moment the good Lord gives us to spend with the ones we love.

You and your family are in my prayers.

Let the kids know down range. Trust me .... bad news doesn't get better with time and the sooner they know, the sooner they can start dealing with it. As busy as things get in this corner of the world, there are structures in place to help deal with even the worst news. The only question is to send this information via Red Cross message or direct.

My thoughts are with you and them.

Search for the Volcano Drill. That day and the day after are two good videos about sand play. And of course, if you don't have the Situational Shots video series, I suggest you buy it. Well worth it when you pocket the money from your buddies on Sunday.
