Indoor Practice Tips

Tue, 04/05/2011 - 15:36 -- Don Trahan

Sometimes the weather doesn't work out in your favor, but you still want to practice your golf swing. Fortunately, there are some really simple things you can do inside that will keep your golf game sharp.

Our resident Rolfer Golfer, Bruce Chaffin, recently responded to a comment on the blog about practicing indoors with a shorter club. I've touched on the subject of using shorter clubs indoors before, but Bruce brings up some interesting points about something that I never even thought about. Bruce was subconsciously changing his swing to avoid hitting the carpet as he would normally hit the ground when playing outside. This was causing him to have stress and strain in his neck area.

So when you practice indoors, make sure you are not altering your swing otherwise you may be hurting yourself more than helping.

Keep it vertical,

The Surge!

I just wanted to second Tina's tip about squeezing a ball. I have several raquet balls that belong to my dog that I use. I haven't tried her method of one finger at a time, but it is interesting. I squeeze and hold for about 5-10 seconds and it has virtually eliminated the problem. I do the same thing with both left and right hand and found it has increased strength in my forearms. Hope it helps because I know what you're going through.

Sorry Steve, I'm trying to behave, I really am
My mistake was that I drew a scale picture of him
I think my keyboard went on auto pilot when it heard me laughing at this gangly thing with a tiny little head - 3.5" head, oh dear, God help us

Yeh I know, I'm not well but I really don't want to be fixed

SUBJECT - No Fly Zones
One of my golfing groups occasionally has a member missing
A control freak has chosen to fill that spot on the time sheet recently, lets call him CF

Some of his qualities:-
- Look at me
- I know everything
- Jumps in on conversations just to change it to a topic about him
- Bloke A says "Did anyone see that show last night" - CF hasn't, so responds with "No but the other day I blah blah blah"
- "What you blokes should be doing is blah blah"
- While the rest of us stand on a par 3 tee with 7 irons in our hand, CF says "It's only a wedge for me but I'll knock it down with this 9 iron"
- "They're not out of my range yet even though I'm only using a 3 wood"
Anyhow you get the idea

So yesterday I tried a little experiment
I gave CF no responses or feedback to his attention seeking
He got louder, more ridiculous, more intense because he wasn't getting our attention

Have you noticed Bill's demeanour changing - A little more acid of late

Surge,
I had spinal surgery on the 21st of Dec 2010, removal and replacement of two vertabrae above the tail bone along with all the discs and screws and stuff. Well long story short, I played 18 here in Houston, at Hermann Park and shot an 85, parred the first two out of the gate and birdied two on the back nine with 4 more par scored. All accomplished by your tutouring. I was still and focused,
Head, eye, hand, shaft to head and strike!
Thanks, Don't tell my doctor, I'm three months ahead of schedule!.

Forgive me if you've heard this one, But I cant resist

A man was sitting in the bar when he noticed another patron a few stools away. The guy had a body like Charles Atlas, but his head was the size of a thimble.

The first man said, "Please excuse me for staring, but I can't help but be curious as to why your body is so well developed, but your head is so small?"

The man said, "Buy me a drink and I’ll tell you."

The drink was ordered and the story began. "I was in the navy and my ship was sunk by a torpedo. I was the only survivor and I managed to make it to a deserted island a few miles away. I had been there alone for several months and was sitting on the beach one day waiting for a bird or fish to come by so I would have something to eat, looking up I saw a beautiful mermaid sunning on a nearby rock. She swam over to me and informed me that she was a magical mermaid and could grant me three wishes. 'Great,' I said. 'I’d like to be rescued.'"

"She slapped the water with her tail and a ship appeared, sailing straight for my island. Next I asked for a body like Charles Atlas. Another slap of the tail and here it is. Then, noticing how beautiful she was and all my other wishes fulfilled I asked if I could make love to her. She said no that it just wouldn't work her being half fish and all. So I said, 'Well, how about a little head then?'"

Ted,
I had a similar elbow problem a few years ago. Two things helped cure it:

1) Try some massage therapy - every muscle in my left forearm was in spasm and I didn't know it. This then spread up to the neck and shoulder area, causing big issues.
2) Start building up your forearm muscles, such as by squeezing one of those small balls with EACH FINGER separately (finger to thumb). - This was at the recommendation of my massage therapist, and works all the different forearm muscles. This, along with massage, cured and has prevented any recurrence of my elbow issues.

Also, stretching and ice after golf was a necessity until tendonitis resolved. Cortisone tends to weaken the joints and supporting structures. Don't go there if you can avoid it.

Thanks for the quick response. They are not showing up in my junk/spam box either. I check that every day just from habit. When they do come/arrive they are always in my inbox, it's just that on the few times that they do come, they are always a day or two late. You are doing better than the Surge Utube post site notification though. They are generally 2 or 3 days late. I still haven't received the notice for the most recent video, Indoor practice. If and when it comes, I'm sure it will be to my inbox. It's nothing really bothersome because i check the site several times a day anyway. I'm just puzzled over the situation. Thanks

Lynn42 - A friend of mine with tennis elbow told me the same thing, so I've tried it and you're right, it does work. I forgot about that. I'll have to find my ball. I also used a racquetball, but the one I used belonged to my son because my dog is way too small to play racquetball. Does your dog have his own racquet?

KennyPl, I've had the same problem since October. My elbow pain is on the outside of my elbow, which my doctor says means it isn't from golf. He said if it was caused by golf, it would be on the inside part of my elbow. In my case it's a repetitive stress injury, kind of like carpal tunnel. My doctor prescribed "RICE" -- Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation. Frankly, in my case, that's all worthless. I have to wear an elbow-to-wrist brace when I play golf. I also have switched my computer mouse at work to my left hand. Stretching it out seems to help. For some reason, doing pushups helps, as well as squeezing a tennis ball. I have a friend with the same thing. He just had a cortisone shot in his elbow and is totally pain-free now. I'm seriously considering doing the same thing.

I don't know if you remember, but when we first started negotiating the terms of me being his guinea pig, he mentioned that he was going to fix my elbow. I really think he's given up on me. Makes me kind of sad. I don't know if I can handle the rejection. I think I might need therapy now.

I AM TOTALLY COMMITTED TO YOUR SWING AND IT HAS BEEN ALLOWING ME TO MAKE BETTER CONTACT. I NOTE THAT MY SWING SPEED HAS INCREASED SLIGHTLY FROM AN AVG OF 92 TO 96 BUT AM NOW HITTING THE BALL ON THE TOE (ACCORDING TO THE SIMULATOR) BUT THIS HAS BEEN CONFIRMED JUST RECENTLY WHILE AT THE RANGE AND VIDEO TAPING IT. MY POSTURE IS MUCH BETTER AND I AM STANDING CLOSER TO BALL WHICH PERPLEXES ME BECAUSE I AM STILL HITTING MORE ON THE TOE. THE VIDEO SHOWS I AM NOT FALLING AWAY BUT STANDING TALLER THROUGH AND AT THE T FINISH. DO YOU THINK I'M GETTING TOO TALL TO EARLY OR IS IT SOMETHING ELSE?

A guy I know who used to work for Chrysler Dynamics knew a guy who quit the company after they started to develop a boron rezonosticator which he copied and now uses it to fabricate lozenated chokers which can handle up to 30 chickens per hour. If you fly up here to Alaska, I'll take you to the North Slope where the chickens are choked and stuffed into the pipeline. You'll have to convince Doc to come on his own, cause he probably can't choke chickens nearly as fast as Bill can, not to mention stuffing the choked chickens into the pipeline in a timely manner, so as to satisfy the government and convince them to use the modified graphite in order to launch F-111 fighter bombers off of the deck of the Exxon Valdez.

Janlyon, have you measured the length of your driver and 5 wood? They may just be too long for your size. Measure your Wrist To Floor length and compare it to this chart:
WTF.........Starting Driver Length
29-32...........42.5
32-34...........43
34-36...........43.5
36-37...........44
37-38...........44.25
38-39...........44.5
39-40...........44.75

Also, you may not be keeping your upper body behind the ball and sweeping up with the fairway wood and driver. Probably releasing too early in the FUS.

Don,

I've been playing golf for about 45 years. I'm now 60. Starting about 4 years ago I've developed a severe case of "golfer's elbow." I've gone to my family Dr., two different orthopedic Drs. physical therapy twice. I've tried wearing a forearm band while playing, had cortisone shots, and even blood plasma therapy treatment. Nothing seems to work. Any thoughts?

That sounds like EXACTLY what I have. Holding my elbow in a bent position definitely aggravates it. I also sleep with my hand under my chin. I already have the brace from your link and it helps, but the one that really seems to help the most is the one I have that's all one piece and slides over my arm. I think it helps a little bit more because it holds more of my forearm stable. Good idea to sleep with the elbow brace. I'll try it. I also have a hand splint, so I'll try that, too. Thanks for the advice!

Ted, I also had severe right golfers elbow for a year and a half. Last July on the old site someone mentioned ART, a type of chiropratic treatment. I looked it up online and found a Doctor fairly close. After 10 treatments I was about 90% better and could play 36 holes a day, although I would have to ice it down at night. I have been doing rotation exercises daily to strengthen the muscles and it helps, although I still have occasional pain when I use it alot, probably from scar tissue. Get some help ASAP because it won't get better on its own. Hit them long & straight! Marv.

Charlie - I saw my doctor, but he really didn't do anything other than look at it; no diagnostic tests. He's pretty conservative, so possibly if I went back to him he'd order tests. He did state that he believes it's a repetitive stress injury, like carpal tunnel, and I'm sure he's right because if I do something like pick up a glass it will hurt, but if I wear a wrist/forearm brace, it doesn't. I'm not sure what I'm going to do about it at this point. I'm able to play golf if I wear an elbow/forearm brace, but now that the weather is getting warmer, it'll be hard to wear it, not to mention the weird tan I'm getting.

Some might say this stream is HEADED in the wrong direction.

But, that is not the thought that is running through my HEAD.

You are a great guy, you are HEAD and shoulders above the rest.

Don't let this make your morale go down, keep you HEAD up.

I can't take this any more, so I am HEADING out to play a round with dad.

One last thought.

A captain of a merchant ship finds a box on a small island. Inside the box is a shrunken head. The captain puts the shrunken head on a shelf in his cabin. It stays there for the next twenty years. The shrunken head is on the head table at the captain's retirement party. The first mate shares many stories about where the ship, its crew, and yes the shrunken head have travel during the captain's career. It is reported that the ship traveled over a million miles.

This story serves to prove that a little head goes a long way.

I'd like to suggest you try one more thing. I have ulnar nerve neuropathy that originates at my outer (lateral) elbow, and I am an OT. When my injury gets aggravated (usually when I've been handwriting a lot which requires my elbow to be bent), I find that if I sleep with an elbow brace it helps to keep my arm straighter while I'm sleeping which helps my neuropathy. I also sleep with a resting hand splint during those times too, to keep my wrist from bending while I sleep (I'm one who likes to sleep with my hand under my chin, which means my wrist and elbow are flexed to the maximum degree). Here is the elbow brace I use (it is adjustable so that is helpful for fitting people of all sizes): http://www.acebrand.com/wps/po...

Ted,

Weights and streching sure has help me overcome elbow pain. My right elbow used to hurt so bad that I couldn't even lift a glass of water without being in pain.

Lighter weights and more repitions works the best and will help you to build the lean and flexible muscles that golfers need.

Not sure how much golf swinging you do in a week, but muscle soreness is usually caused by over using or overstressing the muscle group in question. Maybe you could take a look at how much you play an practice. Maybe you need to cut back a little?

One other thing you can do is to start up some kind of weight training program combined with a good stretching routine. You should only have to do it a couple times a week. I know that your elbow is your main focus but it is best to come up with a program that works all of your muscle groups to help keep your body in balance. Here is one site that I used to come up with workout routines.

http://www.sport-fitness-advis....

Also you should check out Bruce Chaffin's website. He has some good golf specific warmup videos. Here is a link to his video page. He even has one video that addresses golfer's elbow.

FYI - GRAVATAR SIZES & REALITY
If anyone wishes to have their photo - gravatar more lifelike & closer to actual size it can be done

jb51 has achieved it & I figured out how
You will notice it's about 3/4 inch high - very close - let me explain

He has provided us with his measurements
Waist to floor = 60"
Wrist to floor = 27"
Height = 71"

This results in
Waist to top of head = 11"
A head is approximately 1/3 of a waist to head measurement
So his head is approximately 3.5" high
Yes, I know that is a tiny little head but don't laugh, he told us he is a clever guy & I now see it
His head is very low MOI & great for getting square at the T finish quickly

So if you want your gravatar more lifelike, get jb to give you a fitting

Notice jb's gravatar is blank grey - it's a real X-Ray photo, showing it's contents
You may also notice Bill's gravatar is the same colour but it's nowhere near actual size
p.s.
If you check Bill in DISQUS, he is now "anonymous 2" (identity number ??)
