DJ Reports from the Arnold Palmer Invitational

Wed, 03/23/2011 - 18:32 -- Don Trahan

DJ is down in Orlando this week at Bay Hill and took some time to give us an update yesterday. He'€™s digging deep to find his game and when I talked to him he was confident he was close. It'€™s week 2 of the belly putter.

What I admire so much about DJ as my son and as my student, is his determination, his faith in his swing, and the guts it takes to go out there again with confidence. I'€™m also proud of him sharing his thoughts and feelings with you. It'€™s an amazing experience for all of us.

Both DJ and I want to thank you for your continued support and the kind messages you'€™ve left on the site. Yes, they do get passed along.

As DJ says, it'€™s a tough game and they'€™re playing on some of the toughest courses on the PGA Tour. But he loves it and that'€™s what'€™s important.

The Surge!

Great to hear from you. Take care of those feet. A soldier with bad feet is no good. I just wanted you to know I missed you. Hope the home project turned out good.

I know getting old can suck on some days. However, I think it beats the heck out of the other choice.

You give old Moses a treat from me.

I'm only speaking up here because she asked us to if you questioned her sincerity. She is serious about it and hoping for the best. She does wants to hit the ball better and further. We're done hearing promises. Looking forward to results. So please don't keep eluding to 'if she is serious'.
We commend her for putting herself out there and doing this. Give her the benifit of the doubt until it's over and perhaps some respect may come your way too.

I get the red line too. The problem with me being me is that they are telling me I spelled it wrong, but don't tell me how to spell it right.

I always tell people "Hire rednecks, we are fun to watch."

I think Vic coached Sampras in Palos Verde and he also coached Lindsay Davenport. Vic told me that Pete returned to him for advice before his last US Open match (he won it). Vic said - Pete, you know all there is about to play tennis ... go out and have fun. I was not there, Vic also was doing 3D motion analysis and instruction video with tennis great - Stan Smith:

Ok, I will bring my driver. I will not compromise on the ticket. I fly business, that's it. I'm going to be on a plane for 9+ hours and then be expected to hit a golf ball at my best. I am not going to fly cramped and uncomfortable. Also, turning around and flying back that afternoon, I'm spending most of the day on a plane and you're being unreasonable about it. The ticket is expensive, I know, that's why I'll pay half. The bull about it being a way for me to back out is ridiculous. I'm willing to spend the money. It seems to me that it's you that is using the cost as a way to dodge it. I will even pay for transportation once I'm there. So, this is my final offer and last comment on the subject until you meet the terms. Please don't think you can spin this to anyone that I'm the one not being agreeable or trying to back out. I've done all I can to make this work.

Scott’s latest new way is an eager adoption of Mark Sweeney’s

in google. This system truncated the name. Last year there was a tournament where Scotty was draining everything from 15 feet in and then he went on TV and gave the credit to the Aimpoint people.

I am here to improve and apparently this what Scotty is into as well ... from the same page as you will find from the Google search:

Scott consistently looks for news ways to improve. He’s investigated technological advances in equipment, thoroughly explored technique with his teacher, Jim Hardy, embraced an accelerated conditioning and rehab program, relocated to La Quinta for year-round training, and stays on the cutting edge of performance psychology.

I am not a big Jim Hardy fan ... Surge and Derek have given me ways to become a lot more consistent and I bet my buddy with two hip replacements would do a better job that Scott gets on conditioning ... but some conditioning is usually better than no conditioning at all. And Scotty went for performance psychology and users here hooted at Surge for looking at the EEG issue when that is the right thing to do.

How Unsupervised Learning Impacts Training: From Brain to Behavior

The goal of this multidisciplinary grant is to examine the neurobiological, genetic, brain dynamic, and neural circuit correlates of unsupervised learning and training. The proposed studies utilize the new capabilities for creating 3D immersive environments and simultaneous EEG-fMRI recordings recently established through ONR-DURIP grant # N000140811114.

...

$7.5 million big ones for exactly what Surge was looking into. Of course I have a way to actually do this but the point remains ->> your body is in its 3D location every second of every day of every week because your brains sends out signals that control it to be there. Imagine the implication to sports if Surge could train DJ and others at the EEG level.

Like what if we could record DJ's EEGs and see what good shots looked like and bad shots as well. This then takes us to a whole new era of sports training. I passed the idea to a guy who has coached Ames, Jack Nicklaus, Faldo and Seve and he said that it was exactly the way to go when the tech emerges. Vic Braden, who developed Pete Sampras, says the same thing.

WK, I forgot of one thing that might teach you something, if you are open to something that might be counter to your current opinion. A true ENTP would understand this quickly, so let's see how quickly you pick this up. It is in reference to the Ryan Leaf episode.

If he was ABCD (fake letters), he could possibly have all of the abilities of the opposite letters (EFGJ, fake letters.) The woman who developed the theories of the MBTI is well known to be an INFP, but she did all of her research calcuations on a manual calculator, demonstrating almost totally ISTJ skills, with three opposite letters. For me, I have my type scores, but I behave like four other types, and I use all for of those other types for diffent parts of my sports practice, learning, and performance. You would be amazed at the details. You would also wonder, why don't cancel out a couple and use only one or two, but if you did, it would tell me even more that you lack enough understanding of type. It is not so much as what type you are but how you use it.

Don't forget, I worked on this from 1980 through around 2005. I may have gone to over 100 conferences to learn from others and to give papers.

Your dad with the putter up on the tree reminded me of a joke that might get me knocked off this blog, but here goes. A guy chases a bear up a tree. He goes to get his dog, a shot gun, and his neighbor. He tells his neighbor, "Hold this shotgun; I'm clmbing the tree to shake the bear down. When the bear hits the ground, the dog is trained to bite him in the you-know-what." The neighbor asks, "What do I do with the shot gun?" The guy says, "If I fall first, shoot the dog."

If I get kicked off, you'll have to help me get back on.

I forget what type Ryan Leaf was but Vic begged the SD Chargers not to draft him and get a second Stringer from another team. Vic said that his type has yet to ever be a success in the NFL as a quarterback. Drafting Leaf set back the Chargers for years.

As to ENTP -- I am one and so are my two kids. My wife is an INTP and Vic wonders how we get along -- pretty well. Being an ENTP gets you called all sorts of names here on this forum. My guess (just a guess) is that Surge is also an ENTP and that the limited turn fits his body as well as his personality.

Before coaching tennis Vic was a school psychologist. A buddy of his advises the Celtics and Phoenix Suns on who to draft based on this sort of thing. As an ENTP - all I can say is that I love the 3/4 swing.

Vic was watching the Masters when Faldo beat Greg Norman and this guy noted Norman had lost his ability to turn like around the 10th hole - well before it was reflected in his swing.

I did an 3D analysis after taking it up and found out that my turn stopped at 59 degrees. My 2 hour lesson with Derek Hardy consisted of Derek saying "turn your chest". His tip of going towards the SBG after the mitt at 10 degree really helps me get to 70 degrees.

Since turning is essential to golf it cuts over every type personality.

I was at Jack Kramer's golf course with Vic (before Jack passed away) and we were chatting and sitting at a table with a view of the driving range. Vic left the table and went out to a Korean guy practicing and told the guy he believed the guy was an accountant ,,, and Vic was right.

Vic was also featured on his ability to quickly predict in Blink by Malcolm Gladwell:

"Blink identifies experience as another key component in the ability to make rapid and accurate decisions. Deep familiarity with one's subject, be it ancient Greek statues, professional tennis, marriage counseling, or, one may assume, battle displays, is an essential component to making correct fast decisions. To demonstrate this point Gladwell offers the example of Vic Braden, a noted tennis coach who apparently has a supernatural ability to predict when a professional tennis player is going to double-fault. Yet Braden cannot explain how he knows the double fault will occur. Clearly decades of coaching tennis have left him with a predictive ability that functions either so rapidly or so subconsciously that he himself does not understand it."

But Vic was impressed when his buddy predicts Norman's collapse when the numbers said he was a shoe in.

As to:
"Having done research in MBTI personality type for about 25 years, I can provide an arm's length of papers on effects of personality type on learning and behavior. I'm willing to debate this. I've been invited to give talks on this to coaches of high school tennis teams and at national conferences of applications of the MBTI, in sports in my case."

What do you say to them? How would you get HS kids in Mississippi to go to college as scholar athletes for instance? Only around 10% of those kids even take the SAT if what I have been told is true.

Hey T here is what little I know about clubfitting that interest me so much and found this from Hireko's website. Steel is inherently consist relatively speaking. There are weight tolerances which equate to frequency variations, but a good clubmaker can sort through the shafts and make a very good set even with some tolerance. The average golfer would probably never even tell these differences in a commercial grade steel shaft where the tolerances are higher than one with tighter tolerances or premium shafts that have been weight or frequency sorted by the manufacturer like the Dynamic Gold or Rifle respectively.

Tour vans are slightly different in that you are working with the best golfers in the world with an ultra consistent swing compared to the average Joe. QC checks are great, but selecting the right equipment from the start is more important.

The ticket is supersaver on American Airlines. Business class is way to back out from coming. Same with your driver. Not bringing it or having it fedexed is a way to keep from having a head to head competition.

Janet is now your stand in. If we can get added distance and accuracy for her then we could have for you if you had really come. The Callaway Staff people are sorry that you aren't coming. I am fitting them with this shaft material and they wanted to see if your driver would beat the one I would have had fitted for you.

My fitness buddy who has 2 hip replacements was at Stadium this afternoon and so was I and so was all the latest and greatest drivers from Taylormade.

he hit the driver I had made for him like 30 to 40 yards longer than anything Taylormade had available. he is about 6'1 and the driver I had made for him is 46"..

You can pay half and I will pay the equivalent to AA's supersaver fare. That leaves just a few hundred dollars to cover. So I have asked members of this forum to get involved and kick in for the balance. Several hundred dollars split 10 or 40 ways is chump change.

My guess is that these people here won't come to your defense and chip in the 20 bucks it would take to purchase the ticket you want. I guess that is the measure of their belief.

Janet will have to do as your stand in and we should be getting her going Sunday afternoon. I would like to see her get into fitness as well as just buy more distance through a better shaft.

Good, then it's settled. I would like to leave early on Sat morning and return that afternoon. Ticket for business class and Delta. Thanks Bill!

Have not seen or heard anything since then. So, I thought I'd make things even easier and ease off on some of my requirements.

#1. A rental car will be fine but no sub compact or compact. I am used to driving a SUV and would expect something comparable.

#2. I will cover any expenses that I incur while I am out there which should only be food.

#3. I will not back off the business class ticket as I will be in a plane for 9 hours and then trying to do a fitting. I do not want to be "tired" out from flying much less flying coach. As the offer to buy a ticket was made and there was not stipulation to cost, this really should not be "deal" breaker. I have also stated that I will pay half of the cost.

#4. I will not expect a payment of $1000 up front. Purchase of the business class ticket will show me well enough the level of commitment.

Okie Dokie. That's it for me and all you have a wonderfully blessed day! Will be right back after this commercial break! LOL LOL LOL LOL

I lost my post, so I have to re-enter all of my text.
First, real research has shown that couples with at least three type letters (you ENTP, your wife INTP), are highly likely to get along fine. Couples with zero common letters are most likely to not get along. But as usual, there are exceptions.

Second, I can't comment on the Mississippi kids because you present your data in an iffy manner. Anyway, SAT scores are crude predictors of academic success. Any certified college counselor will tell you that, but SAT scores are very good predictors of other college performance variables (I taught college for 36 years).

The Ryan Leaf story has been told before. It makes interesting small talk, but it is most interesting in hind-sight is 20-20 talk. He could have been successful, and then another person would say, “See, he is the first person of his type to be a successful NFL quarterback. “ It is true that athletes cluster, but it is also true that type is not a limitation. It is more likely that there would be a mis-match between the personality type of the quarterback and the system that his will be expected to run. An INTP quarterback would not be happy running an ESFJ system, and an ISTJ quarterback would not be happy, in general, running an ENFP system. However, motivation, determination, leadership, and talent are bigger determining factors.

As for predicting that something will happen, people predict things all the time. I received an invitation to apply for a college volleyball coaching position when I predicted who the server was going to serve the ball to. It wasn't hard to do. All you had to do was know the server and know where the big hitters were. I was probably lucky. She could have served in the other direction just by accident.

By the way--it is hard to determine a person's personality type by simple observations. In my 20+ years of trying to develop methods of doing s (the process is called type watching), I completely blew it on one case. I had all four letters wrong. But if you observed this person in her hobbies, you would have hit it immediately.
If you ever run into Mamie Van Doren, ask could ask her about me, except you don’t know my name. I had lunch with her TV production company as a consultant.

The problem is this--if I know that many of the things you cite about personality type are partially true but not totally true, what about the other stuff? Are they likewise partially true? I have an unfair advantage, now that I know you are an ENTP. I cannot say that I KNOW what your are thinking, what you are trying to accomplish, or what you are trying to prove, but I can make highly educated guesses of how you are trying to do it. I have a lot of ENTP friends, and while no two ENTPs are highly alike, there are common threads, and they are very diferent from ISFJs. If you were an INTJ, I would read you very differently. If you were an ISTJ, even more differently. If ESFP, I could see where you are coming from. I also have the Association of Psychological Type an arm's length away, and I can verify or dismiss almost anything you might conjecture (conjectures are statements that haven't been proved to be true--I'm sure you know that). By the way, the association has a code of ethics, and there are ethical and unethical ways of using personality type. I try to use it in ethical ways.

You have to be very careful when you try to apply psychological models to a particular individual. So, I’ll be following the grant you pointed us to, and so far, it seems that it is mostly medical, related to parkinson’s disease with small portions devoted to general learning. I reviewed research proposals and manuscripts for reviewed publications, so I'm comfortable reading research abstracts and trying to see what they are trying to conclude.

As you can see, I'm out of the hospital, cutting down on the meds, and clearing up my mind

Dick Lee--your stores of golfing with your dad are cathartic. I didn't get a chance to play with my dad before he passed, but my brother did. I was too busy doing other stuff. He used to complain to his friends that he had to pay other guys's sons to carry his clubs, while his good-for-nothing son (me) went to the beach. He was a small guy, around 5'5" and 140 pounds, but I hear his best handicap at his club was a 6. He played exactly like Surge's teachings--accuracy before distance.

I heard that tournament directors would put him in a foursome with known cheaters so that he could keep track of their scores because of his seemingly unlimited memory--he was a bookkeeper and office manager. It really affected his game, but he was a good scout. If they needed his service, he would give it, even if it knocked him out of the competition. He made up for it by enjoying the poker games in the club house after the round was completed.

Dick, your stories about your dad any the medication I'm taking must be playing with my mind. The nurses can't figure out why I'm teary as I type this. They keep offering me more pain killers, thinking that I'm hurting from my back pains.

Thanks, Dick. You others--if your dad or mom wants to go golfing, and you think they'll spoil your day, take 'em anyway. Go late in evening twilight when the course is empty. Some day, you won't be able to take them. My Mom is 99, going on 100. If she wants to go dancing when I get out, we're going dancing. Damm this medication.

Kevin, I reviewed your video and I think your using a 4 or 5 iron? If so, it appears to me that you have adjusted your ball position too far back for that club which you may have picked up from Don's recent comments from D.J. moving his ball position back which is interesting to me considering D.J.'s comments about poor ball striking of late. It seems to me that the time to complete the setup to the ball and the time it takes to swing the club should both be shorter in duration, there is too much time for tension and poor thinking to creep in. The stance and swing could use more atheleticism and it does not appear to me that you are pre-loading your right side in this video and your head is moving both up and down, and side to side more than it needs to. At the top of your backswing, your right leg is going straight indicating that you have not held your knee position that was established at address. At impact, both of your knees are at the same posture that they had at address indicating that you did not execute the bump properly, I would suggest that you practice skipping the stone to help you with the bump move so you can make a nice transition into your upswing.
Your grip looks good to me, your hip position in the back swing looks correct and I think it would help you to practice with golf shoes on for a better foundation to your swing.
Happy Golfing, I hope this helps Kevin

Pay attention. I have suggested about his swing other than a change in DJ's shaft will give him lots more distance and accuracy. To prove the point .... if you live in the USA I will fly you out here to San Diego and give you a free fitting and shaft so you can see for yourself.

Why hold an opinion when you don't have the facts?

Why not ask DJ if he wants more distance and accuracy? Now you are the one saying what he has now is what is best for him.

The Aimpoint system offers an improvement for putting over what Surge is offering here. I don't make a penny off of telling you that. It works. Scotty mcCarron is living proof. Watch the balls hit on the line at the right speed (that line is drawn by Aimpoint technology). 99% of them go in the hole.

When you hear an announcer say that when the ball is located at X,Y place on the green that all the pros misread the putt and they hit the ball left or right. The next pro in that position does the same mistake about the same way and degree. They all get fooled about exactly the same amount. Aimpoint cuts through all that.

>> Why is it you're not a PGA Master Professional or haven't played on Tour then?!!!!!

I have been aware of sports science for maybe 30 years .... when Gideon Ariel was on the cover of Sports Illustrated (he has been on the cover 8 times ... me = 0). Gideon happened to locate his deal in La Jolla (part of San Diego and right below the Torrey Pines golf course -- you see it from there).

I had a rotational swing which in turn gave me a bad back and Surge's swing allowed me to play a lot more again. Moving from rotational to vertical cost me a lot of yardage so I went back into my sports science info base to see what works. I was attracted to Surge because he used John D Acquisto for his 3D motion analysis of the PPGS swing. John had maybe the second or third fastest recorded pitch in mahor league baseball ever. I met him when I went to Gideon's lab in La Jolla (John since did time in prison but he also became a HS baseball coach locally and sent 7 players into professional baseball in 5 years or so of coaching. Sports science.

Gideon has a system that allows a 3D analysis of your muscles and tells you which ones need help so you can optimize your body for a particular sport. BTW -- I hit a typo in the other post -- Poizner got $4.5 million for his study not $7.5 as I wrote.

For more on Gideon see:

http://www.arielnet.com/main/a... - among other things Giedon invented the nautilus deal or varying resistance over the range of motion and Air Jordans for Nike.

In the past issue of Golf Digest David Leadbetter refers to JJ Rivet. Rivet uses Gideon's technology. Padraig Harrington also uses it via Emilie Forster:

The cool next step for DJ would be to get a APAS (Ariel) analysis from Gideon and then use ACES ... what ACES does is use the 3D info to supply isometric resistance at the exact point your muscles need it so as to optimize your entire body to hit the golf ball better.

Gideon invited me to see Torah harris work out for the US Olympic team and I saw Torah jump 6 inches over the world record in the high jump when the bar was already at 7'6".

I have the same personaitly type as Greg Norman - ENTP - Myers Briggs -- that explains why Norman collapsed at the Masters. Vic said ENTPs have trouble turning. But with Surge's system of limited turn maybe I coulda been a contender;

Have to go see Janet now (let's hope) ... bye bye.

Ronnie, I haven't built or i should say assembled any for years now. The occassional broken shaft for family or friends is about it. When ever i put sets together, i generally used True Temper shafts of one model or another in steel, and in graphite i liked Aldila and Grafalloy. When ever i repaired or replaced a broken shaft i always tried to get the same thing if it was still available, if not the closest with the same specs. Now i know that those specs may or may not have been anywhere close to the original one. I thought i knew what i was doing, but didn't realize how little i actually knew about it. I hope you're having a low pain level evening. Cheers

I am at Stadium about every afternoon around 3 or so .... I don't like to hit the ball into the sun when it is in the south. If you want a free fitting and a free shaft let me know,

Charlie, just want to give my thumbs up on your going toe to toe with Mr. Bill. And as far as the Craigs, Craig63 was (is) for sure the good Craig you refered to. I vaguely remember those series of conversations on the brain and positive thinking etc, from a year or so ago. Anyhow you keep it going as long and as deep as you wish. Looks like you have lots to offer and we don't mind if they're long winded conversations. You go brother. Sounds like your back is getting better too.
happy to hear your hanging in there.
