Grip Pressure Related to Power In the Peak Performance Golf Swing

Sun, 01/20/2019 - 10:32 -- Don Trahan

A viewer writes in about grip pressure and this is an opportunity to talk about not only grip pressure but how it translates to power in the golf swing. Firm grip pressure is required to hit a powerful golf shot, no holding the club lightly which is counter-intuitive.

Don, I appreciate your short on grip pressure. I have been struggling with proper grip pressure since taking the game up. My issue is my ring finger of my left hand. (I am a right hand golfer.) It was broken when I was 9 years old and I cannot grip the club with that finger. Is there anything that I can do to increase my grip pressure with this hand? Either that or continue not to apply pressure with my ring finger. Appreciate any comments or help.

PS I have been playing the game for the last 54 years being 69 years young.

Mr. Trahan,
I have been incrementally incorporating your methodology for the last 4 to 5 months with much success. Today on the range I decided to really go up the tree like never before. I noticed that although I already have a firm grip as you recommend, that my grip and wrist tightened on there own much more as I neared the top to the extent of feeling almost frozen. As long as I bumped first coming down, that same frozen hand position stayed the same and I hit some really flush shots. Until today my grip pressure felt pretty constant but today it increased to the point of feeling a little uncomfortable. Mind you, I had the very distinct feeling that my left wrist was flat at the top. I take from this that I wasn't really going up the tree before today. Is what I experienced the correct feeling or am I overdoing it?

Dear Don. I grew up in Canada playing Hockey. I am Left handed but I play Golf like a Right handed person. My left hand is my dominate hand not my right hand in the golf swing. Any advise on my swing? When I start my down swing the left hand is very powerful.

I have developed a problem recently of jerking my left shoulder up at or near impact. Obviously, this results in many lousy hits. Any ideas on how I can correct this? It is driving me crazy. Any help is appreciated.
