There was a comment posted on the blog recently that talked about the importance of having clubs that are right for each individual's swing. This could not be more accurate.
Phil said he found that getting a lower end model off the rack actually matched up to his swing better than a high end golf club. It's all based on each person's abilities when swinging a golf club. Some people have faster clubhead speed while others have a more moderate swing speed. So it is crucial to get fitted for what is best for you.
Make sure that when you go to a certified fitter, he or she is the one that actually makes the clubs for you. Often times, someone will get fitted for clubs but then the measurements get shipped off and you end up getting clubs that were already built. This is not the correct way for a fitter to operate. You should only pay for your clubs after the fitter has built them and taken you to the range, where you can really see if the clubs are right for you.
Keep it vertical,
The Surge!

Hey Robert Thopmson:
Hey Robert Thopmson:
Happy you invited me to relate more of my own personal war stories.
here is one of my favorites. (want to bet $1,000 that I can fax you a copy of my DD214?)
At the end of my service I was in charge of the engine shop at Eglin AFB where we supporter about every airframe in the inventory including the F-111 that caused the creation of graphite golf shafts. We were the first base in USAF to get enclosed test cells for testing the engines after they go through the repair cycle.
My guys weren't inspecting them and I said why not and they said that no one gave them an inspection chart. So I asked them ... do you know what to inspect? They said yes. So I said ... let's inspect all that until we get the chart.
So they found plates that retained the engines were cracked 50%. And they said there was no template so we had to shut down the test cell. I said ... do we have the same metal that the used plates are made of now. And they said yes. So I said let's remove the old plates and place them over the new material and drill holes based on the old plate locations. So they did and we kept things rolling.
Then they found a bunch of copper in the fuel inlet screen. The new pumps were grinding up and the fuel screen kept all that copper from going through our J79 that was on the cell at the time. We could run any engine through the test cell but with no fuel the base would shut down over time as each plane ran out of hours for the engines. And there were no replacement parts in the supply line since we were first up for new type of test cell.
So I said can we adapt the fitting from the fuel trucks that refuel planes on the flight line to to fit our inlet on the test cell. Indeed we could. So every time we needed to test an engine we would call for a fuel truck and I saved all you tax payer civilians millions of dollars.
Here is the pay off. I was placed in charge of the engine shop because almost all the workers there were aged civil servants who worked at a really slow pace. I was supposed to whip these old codgers into shape but there was no way any of them could be fired. But the rest of the base was always down on them.
The Colonel in charge of Field Maintenance (my boss) said "who thought up the idea of bringing a fuel truck when we needed to trim an engine - THAT WAS A BRILLIANT IDEA, WE NEED TO RECOGNIZE THAT MAN" (one thing we do to an engine is throw ground up peach pits into it to clean off the blades).
So on the spot I figured my men needed credit to build up their morale so I said "Mr Crissman did ... it was his idea. AND I HAVE NOMINATED HIM FOR CIVILIAN OF THE MONTH." So I trapped the Colonel and he came down to our work shop and presented Mr. Crissman with Civilian of the Month Award. He didn't want to be there and I think by that point Mr Crissman even figured it was his idea.
Thanks again for a request for another war story.

>So, you can buy a shaft for me to keep, but you canâÂÂt buy one for Doc or Surge to keep. Then buy one for me, and IâÂÂll give it to them. Your story changes with every player.
You are hard trenched against new technology so I took away every excuse you have in order to expose your point of view. Then you return to attacking the person Saul Alinsky style rather than wondering if the new shaft would give Surge more distance (30+ yards) and more accuracy.
I am not supposed to allow my driver out of my possession so I am ready to fly my fitter back to SC for a demo of its capability. If Doc and Surge want the driver I am pretty sure that they have the capability to purchase it. And then have to possess. And Doc most likely could be able to resell it. That is not for me to say. If Doc agrees to fly to SD I will pay for his airfare as well as give him a free fitting and a new shaft at my expense.
Since I am paying to fly the fitter back to SC for a demo I figure that is a decent enough offer on my part. And Doc and Surge will be able to own and possess drives my fitter creates for them if they so choose.
After all the commotion here about the "magic shaft" ... let's say that both Doc and Surge experience and added 25 to 30 yards (just a guess but Surge should get 40 yards or more) ... what I would like to see if Doc get the only authority to resell these shafts and fit them to people via the Internet so long as he meets a production minimum. IOW ... only Doc is the online reseller. But this is not my call. Like what if Doc and Surge split an extra $500,000 or 2 million (NET!!) every year selling "magic shafts." Doc knows enough fitting to come up to speed on making clubs with this shaft and my fitter can work with him till he is as good as my fitter.
This would put people who show up here inside the ropes and getting quality formerly reserved just for tour pros ... but actually beyond even what tour pros are using. Again ... this is not my call. But I would like Doc and Surge to have a sole exclusive right to sell this shaft over the Internet. And the special skill required to get the most out of the magic shaft can come only from Doc. This shaft may come OEM from Taylormade or Adams or Callaway (a staff member there is currently being fitted with the magic shaft) but the special value added of getting the last possible once of perfection out of this weapon comes only from Doc.
The added number of eyeballs showing up for magic shafts would drive demand for the rest of what Surge offers for sale. And I would also like to see people being able to alter their bodies to optimize them (their body) using the biomechanics technology of Gideon Ariel.
JJ Rivet (http://biomecaswing.com/GB/pre... is who David Leadbetter goes to for 3D motion analysis. Leadbetter said so in the last issue of Golf Digest. Surge has a better swing theory than Leadbetter has and Gideon Ariel can't teach you how to swing a golf club. Gideon has a system (ACES) that takes motion analysis data ( APAS is 3D motion analysis) and uses that data to alter the muscles in your body so you can more correctly execute the PPGS vertical swing that Surge has pioneered. Ariel did not invent the PPGS swing, Surge did. But the combo of Ariel technology + Surge's swing ideas = super fast learning curve and the beginning of taking your golf game to a whole new level.
like 30 more yards from the magic shaft and 30 more yards from biomechanic improvement to your body. And stretching regularly is needed as well.. The right kind and all the time. As we age we all get stiff -- like we become like Tim Conway as the little old man on the Carol Burnett Show..

Thanks for confirming what I felt. The smaller 325CC head sets up well for my eye and the shaft just seems to work. The "whoosh" takes place past the point of contact in practice swings which was my first clue.
If my weather will cooperate and allow my swamp to become a golf course again I'm looking forward to the second time out with it.
At the risk of overinflating your ego the term genius comes to mind.

Lynn: Our new and improved sunscreen hats will simply amaze you. We can actually get you an extra 30 yards just by wearing this hat. It has built-in sunglasses with a rangefinder, and little wires that attach directly to your earlobes and whisper golf instructions to your brain so you can never, ever screw up another golf shot. And, the really cool thing that we nearly have developed is an automatic side-flap that folds up when it senses the club shaft approaching. You never have to take it off. Incredible. More details later. R2
Jack, feel and control around
Jack, feel and control around the greens is more important to you than raw distance, so a softer ball is clearly more comfortable for you. That's what fits you, so there's no conflict. When you tried the harder ball, was it harder core with a soft cover, though? Or all-around harder?
For myself, I just don't like the feel when I hit a softer ball off the tee or fairway. Certainly when I was younger I couldn't use them because I over-compressed them. Back when they used compression ratings on balls, I laughed after I won long drive at a tournament and they gave me a sleeve of 90 compression balls as my prize. I gave them to my father because if I hit them, I lost 20-30 yards. It felt like trying to play golf with squash balls.
If you have a no manipulation
If you have a no manipulation swing, club fitting is very important, but even most pros have some quirks in their swing. I learned early to adjust my swing to the club available and have never found a club that I can't hit quite well. The main difference in clubs and swings is confidence. Do you agree?

KennyPl Chuckling as I
KennyPl Chuckling as I write. Had you heard of the theme song "O Ganganchero"? The Bandits from an old movie?
For DoC Griffin and all those who measure their own clubs.
Humble pie from me and an apology in abscentia to the Pro-at County Golf in UK who fitted me for my G2 Pings.
Using my way of measuring the clubs, using the Tom Wishon Chart as a guide. The results I came up with made them an inch too long form me [This after them being shortened by 0.5" before I picked them up].
Then the other day, using the link left by one of our Surge stalwarts.I made a yardstick/ruler device and re-measured them.
Imagine my surprise and sense of shame, after printing the measurements the other day for Doc Griffin to comment on, to find, I had sent a load of baloney!?
It turned out that the the Ping G2's were EXACTLY what they should be for me! I then re-measured the non Ping Clubs in my bag. The r7 Quad, was found to be only 1.25" longer than the optimum for me,ie, 43" and not 2.5" as I thought. : < ( There was a 0.5" gap in all the shaft lengths too.
Measuring the off the shelf Mizuno irons There was also 0.5" difference in all the shafts from 4iron-9iron. They as I said in another post I played well, even though they were still off the shelf. I assumed [perhaps correctly so], they were targetted at the build of the average South East Asian market, were found to be exactly the same shaft lengths as my Pings!!!!!!They are Original Carbon Reg Shafts. I can't get over buying off the shelf what was perfect [length wise]for me! As I am always saying, "Think Lucky,Be Lucky". Stunned.
With the Faux-Pas [French for Foo Kup] I made on the measurments I thought were spot on. There is NO SUBSTITUTE now in my mind for having clubs fitted to the individual. Better Golf is indeed a "FIT AWAY" My apologies Doc Griffin.
On the subject of Balls [mind above navels chaps], in UK my wife found every brand under the sun for me, and lots of them. I had always in NZ played TopFlite of one type or another. I found several balls which I liked, for performance. Some of the Top name brands but the softer ones in the Titeleist,Nike,Callaway,Bridgestone,Dunlop.....etc I settled on the Srixon AD333, which has best suited me. NOW another thought to ponder for me: Now I am using the SSGS swing, and I know, before I get anywhere near a launch monitor, that my swing speed has increased. That is even before I hit a real ball! I wonder if that will change the type of ball I will next use?
www.angelfire.com/pa/TWGOLF/me... This is excellent

You are going to need to update your advertising material. I think you can actually use the "Approved by the little troll" logo on you stuff now. That will probably get you more business than being a top 100 fitter or any of those other trash awards you have accumulated over the years.
Are you still going to keep coming on here posting with all of us little people now that you have arrived?

Like why do you think my housesitter will be heavily armed and I haven't stated the when I may (or may not) be headed east. JanetM was able to figure out how to talk to me on the phone and Doc just left a message on my answering machine. I could easily have driven my fitter up to meet you at Ft irwin and arranged that by a new technology you may never have heard of - very secret - called the telephone.

Are you part of Army Intelligence (G2)? That would explain a lot.
When Doc interrupted my practice today I was flying the ball a 300 yards in the air. I am 66 years old, soon to be 67. I am hitting the ball farther than any time in my life and with ZERO back pain thanks to Don Trahan.

Please, can a moderator call
Please, can a moderator call time on these pointless debates? In other forums that I participate in trolls first receive a warning and are then banned if they ignore it. All I want to do is improve my swing. I am not interested in arguments about itineraries for fittings. If it is impossible to ban trolls, then please, everybody, stop responding. My goal this year is to shoot less than 100. Not an ambitious goal, most would say, but it still seems out of my reach. These long and pointless flame wars are not going to help me (or anybody else) improve my game.
Thanks

Dick,
Dick,
I think I actually had a "golf" related question, but I forgot what it was. Rats, it must have been really important, too.
Why am I not surprised? He
Why am I not surprised? He clearly said his fitter was the coach. Well, if I can find out who he means -- hey, my friend was a pitcher. In fact, he was good enough to play in the minors. It would be funny if he's talking about the same guy. Well, I mean, assuming, of course, that he doesn't change the identity of the fitter again to the woman who ran the snack bar or something.
Not only possible but
Not only possible but probable as the club head will kick more with the shaft in it and thereby increase clubhead speed Saw a good example yesterday in fitting tour player. We went to a different shaft that what he was playing and it added 7 mph to his average and he topped out at an additional 10mph on some shots.

Lubbo,
Lubbo,
Take deeper breaths before swinging as the round goes on - seriously. If you are getting tired the more you play, you have to learn to direct your focus better later in the round. This is one of my problem areas. As I start to tire, I tend to try to play faster to get it over with while I can still swing the club. I am slowly convincing myself to take an extra second or two to "Feel the Swing" (as Surge says) and then "Swing the Feel." Swinging the wrong feel gets my game in all sorts of trouble. The only way to keep from letting the bad habits creep back in is to ingrain the good habits. This comes from feeling the swing. Remember the feel of your best shot and try to repeat that feel before making your swing. Hope this helps.

The first putter fit was from Taylormade at Aviara. Then I went through Aimpoint and their Edel putter creation system that is linked to Aimpoint. I made it clear at the outset that I wanted a long putter like Scotty McCarron uses and all Edel makes is the shorter putter. If I could use that short putter it was ideal but on long putts my hands get too active so I just gave it back and they returned my money. The fault was with the fitter ... he knew I asked for a long putter but wanted to make the sale ... or if we grant him some slack he might not have understood what I wanted (even as I made it pretty clear). He sold the only thing he could sell ... not what I wanted.
But the putter fitting process for Edel putters couldn't be better. World class. They really know fitting ... I would say this is better than Scotty Cameron's deal. if you can live with a normal length putter I highly recommend the Edel Putter.
In the process I learned I needed a lot heavier putter than I got from the people at Taylormade at Aviara. Edel/Aimpoint is 100 light years better than Taylormade at Aviara. What I wound up doing is adding weight to my Taylormade Monza putter so it feels like the Edel putter and just living with something I know is second class.
Edel needs to create long putters ... that would solve everything .... except for my lack of ability.

The way to increase launch angle is to place the ball more forward at address so you hit up on the ball. This applies to all golfers - LDA types to lower swing speeds. Energy spent in spinning the ball results in shorter drives. If a person needs to hit a softer ball to compress it properly they can still reduce the spin placed on it.
BTW ... Doc says he hits up on all his shots including his irons.
