Fitted Clubs Make All the Difference

Fri, 04/08/2011 - 14:21 -- Don Trahan

There was a comment posted on the blog recently that talked about the importance of having clubs that are right for each individual's swing. This could not be more accurate.

Phil said he found that getting a lower end model off the rack actually matched up to his swing better than a high end golf club. It's all based on each person's abilities when swinging a golf club. Some people have faster clubhead speed while others have a more moderate swing speed. So it is crucial to get fitted for what is best for you.

Make sure that when you go to a certified fitter, he or she is the one that actually makes the clubs for you. Often times, someone will get fitted for clubs but then the measurements get shipped off and you end up getting clubs that were already built. This is not the correct way for a fitter to operate. You should only pay for your clubs after the fitter has built them and taken you to the range, where you can really see if the clubs are right for you.

Keep it vertical,

The Surge!

I have been up a long time. I am punch drunk with laughter. I am sitting out here on the patio smoking a cigar and typing till my fingers hurt.

I am laughing so hard, my ribs are killing me.

This is more fun than shooting fish in a barrel. I have not had this much fun since the last time I shot Bambie's mom.

Hey Bootlicker,

You say you got your ride in 67 because you were friends with Col Mitchell, the commander of the 553rd. Col Mitchell didn't take over command until December 7 1969.

Here's your quote from below, "The BatCats were an entirely different deal that the fighter planes. I had nothing to do with their maintenance. I just knew Colonel Mitchell from Travis AFB where we played golf together and he asked me if I wanted to go on a mission. Of course I did -- we loitered over North Vietnam monitoring sensors all night long for 12 hours. I did this mission on my one day off. "

You are a lair.

As to: "LASZLO never said one thing about you or new information so where in the world do you get off jumping him?"

I will give you the benefit of the doubt and figure you missed Lazlo posting this:

"Deep frustrations have led to sarcasm and derision on this blog, and the devil is being painted on the wall with each additional response to Mr. Bill's challenges. It is not important to explore whether Mr. Bill is being driven by hormonal, mental, or pharmaceutical directives. It has been made abundantly clear, by Mr. Bill himself, that he is and will continue to be a legend in his own mind, which is his right and perhaps the destiny he must face. I am doubtful that Mr. Bill is an idiot, but these same doubts suggest that it may be wise not to argue with him as he will drag you down to his level and beat you with his experience. "

All new technology is resisted and so this new shaft is no different.

>>I asked you for dates, pick 3 dates, get them to me NOW! Then shut up about the shaft Bill or I promise you that you will be kicked of of here permanetly.

Dates are between you and my fitter. We will call you tomorrow. I don't know his schedule and do not want to obligate him to a time he can't meet. I want to fly him out to meet you and Surge now that someone has expressed interest ... this takes us right back to where we were some months ago but this time I am only going to pay for his airfare. If you fly AA out here supersaver you get a free driver shaft and a free fittling plus I will pick up the airfare. Plus your new driver will give you 25 to 40 more yards.

What gets me is that I have the reality of clubbing the young German guy who speaks no English and watching him hit my driver 60 or 70 yards past my best. JanetM is free to see how far this driver launches a ball anytime she wants and I get called a "liar" by her. So much energy spent in negativity when the point should be if this material actually works -- no one seems interested in that.

JB51 has a friend who may or may not have run into my fitter and seen the same results I got. Maybe this is a different material from some other source -- no way to tell. That is the sole issue -- am I getting all this extra distance or not and would others also get the same boost as well. What also gets me is that JB51 is trying to build something to beat my driver rather than wanting to meet my fitter. Why is everyone so fearful that this guy is quite real and he delivers results because he is on the inside of shaft design with a guy who is 15 years ahead of the rest of the world. I would rather join up with such technology than fight it and be resistant to change. Others clearly aren't interested in long straight drives and prefer personal insults and attacks like Laslo's behavior.

The process Laslo and others use is called the ad hominem fallacy. Basic fault to an argument:

Description of Ad Hominem

Translated from Latin to English, "Ad Hominem" means "against the man" or "against the person."

An Ad Hominem is a general category of fallacies in which a claim or argument is rejected on the basis of some irrelevant fact about the author of or the person presenting the claim or argument (T Medley specializes in this). Typically, this fallacy involves two steps. First, an attack against the character of person making the claim, her circumstances, or her actions is made (or the character, circumstances, or actions of the person reporting the claim). Second, this attack is taken to be evidence against the claim or argument the person in question is making (or presenting). This type of "argument" has the following form:

Person A makes claim X.
Person B makes an attack on person A.
Therefore A's claim is false.
The reason why an Ad Hominem (of any kind) is a fallacy is that the character, circumstances, or actions of a person do not (in most cases) have a bearing on the truth or falsity of the claim being made (or the quality of the argument being made). http://www.nizkor.org/features...

The truth or falsity of the claim in this case is whether or not my driver delivers more distance as I have stated (repeatedly). I have offered endless ways to test this proposition - flyiing everyone and anyone here for a fitting and giving them the driver shaft all at my expense. And then JanetM true to the ad hominem fallacy calls me a "Liar" when she can check out how the drive performs any time she wishes.

Amos, I've read you referring to yourself as different Amos
Perhaps we both are
Robert's analysis makes perfect sense but I don't fit the categorisation

I had a think about Robert's information & today I played with a ball that's harder than the one I usually use
My feel for speed with the putter was decreased
My putter is steel with no insert
To use a hard ball I'd need to change putters to one with a very soft insert but I'd still have a weaker chip & pitch game

When I played tennis I liked my strings at around 45 - 50 lbs where most other guys were around 60 lbs - I had more feel & touch that way - It felt like the ball was staying on the strings longer
I get the same feel in golf with a soft ball
It all makes sense to me as I guess your "different" makes sense to you
Go with the flow eh?

Hello T,

Doc built my driver last year with a Pro Force Lady 65 shaft. It took a little getting used to, being the macho guy that I am. The first time I used it in play, one of my pals laughed at me for using a lady's driver. I proceeded to hit the ball straight down the middle, and about 15 yards past his ball. He shut up pretty quick.

Hit'em Long and Straight,
Bob

To Janet,

The shaft says Lady in great big letters. You can't miss it. LOL

It can be helpful to find yourself a mnemonic device to clear your mindset out. That's the second function for me of my "tempo songs." They get my rhythm steady for the game, but they also help me to break out of bad imagery that can build up in your head when a few things go wrong and send you back into old bad habits. Specifically, I use Simon & Garfunkle's "59th Street Bridge Song"--the one that starts off "Slow down, you move too fast..."-- or Bob Marley's "Three Little Birds" with the chorus "Don't worry about a thing, 'cause every little thing gonna be all right."

As usual, you were on the money, thank you. I usually get in trouble when I start thinking about anything. I went to the short course this morning (4 par 4s) and had one swing thought after setup...smooth. I hit the 4 best tee shots on each of those holes I've ever hit. I just forgot about the ball and the T finish and just let it happen. Your driver is without question the best golf investment I ever made. I'm about 15 yards farther than my old Burner and so much straighter it's not to be believed.

Now, if I can only smooth out my putter...lol.

Thanks, Doc

Guys, I'm being a bit facetious here but at our course here in the UK we have a large number of visiting golf societies. I don't know if you have the same in the US. They are people who get together a number of times a year to organize a golfing day out. The standard of golf within these groups varies from the scratch to very high handicap player.
We love going out the following morning after a society has been out. That is when the ponds and rough are littered with Pro V1's and other expensive claimants to being the "straightest" ball you will ever hit. Where we find them completely refutes those claims! We "recycle" them but quite frankly they don't appear to do a better job than Pinnacles or Srixon distance.
I do believe that there are balls that will suit an individual's swing and clubs but we all succumb to the advert hype that if you pay more you will get more. IT AIN'T SO!

WK's picture

Hey BP:

What the heck are you doing on the blog in the middle of the work day?

As to:
"So far it's at least four different airframes that you've claimed to work on in a four year AF career where your "combat" tour was in Thailand."

We had F105 Thunderchiefs at Khorat RTAFB when I got there but I was in an flight line F4e squadron to start with. We also had Air America small prop planes there (CIA) that I serviced when I was running maintenance control at night time. We ran 2 12 hour shifts. Most flying was done during the day so we did most of the repairs at night when I ran things.

The BatCats were an entirely different deal that the fighter planes.

And the facility checker plane was no attached to our wind either. We just serviced it for them It was like a Lear Jet .... I forget who made it. I wanted to get over Vietnam and see it up close and personal so I flew a mission with them too. We circled the navigation site 2 times at about 1,500 feet in altitude. Easy pickings for a shooter from the ground. Landed at Cam Ranh Bay for refueling.

Thanks for your interest in my war stories, My kids have heard them all but they are always fun to retell.

BTW ... one day we got the call to launch anything and everything that would fly. We had developed the tv guided bomb that was finally accurate enough to take out the tiny bridges the NVA was using to supply their troops in the south (some civil war Jabe Fonda). The commies in Paris were arguing about the shape of the negotiating table and it took about a week but we took out every one of their supply lines. They immediately called for peace. Then the democrats gave away S Vietnam by refusing to bomb the incoming tanks from the North long after I left. We won on the battlefield while I was there and the Demoncrats congress saw to it that millions of Vietnamese died under a communist aggression.

They also tried to have communists win all over Latin America and tie Reagan's hands there.

i guess its like buying a suit off the rack...sometimes you will get one that fits well enough to wear to a wedding and make your wife proud (ending with some good results when you get home) ,,,and sometimes you will get one that you can wear on the street corner and ask for money with an empty coffee cup and look like an upper class pan handler or you can wear the bad fitting suit to the wedding too tick your wife off because you didn't want to go in the first place (ending with you sleeping on the couch) ,,..i have purchased clubs both ways and had good and bad results...but we all know that a good fitting will always end with the best result,,,being able to hack up the course with a better set of clubs and looking good in the process,,,

LASZLO never said one thing about you or new information so where in the world do you get off jumping him? And let's talk about new information. Your supposed fitter does't even use modern technology in fitting so don't talk to me about new ideas. I love science. I am a scientific rock star. I love new ideas. However, I don't love stuff that reminds me of walking through the pig pen with my uncles when I was younger and that's what your "stuff" reminds me of. So far you've done nothing but dribble, over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over, and over (look guys it's more of WK's post) and so on. You have not given one piece of verifiable anything. Well, actually I personally think it's verifiable manuer but that's just my opinion ........and everyone else's on the blog as well.

You and all those down range, including your families, are always in my prayers. I lost my nephew/godson in Iraq a couple of years ago, and I hate to see anyone else go through that trauma. My grandchidren's other PaPa is home from the mountains for 2 weeks (1 week left) and then goes back. How can one possibly explain to a 7-year-old and a 4-year-old that their PaPa is not coming back? My nephew's two, the same ages as my grandkids, still don't understand and maybe never will. Maybe WK would like a trip to see what it is like - a little trek up in the mountains would do wonders for his disposition, don't you think?

Take care and may the Lord see you and the rest safely home again.

I have to agree 100 and 10 percent that using a song/tempo to help quiet the mind when it wants to take over in an attempt to diagnose and fix every shot is a great tool. I also prescribe it for my clients who have very jerky swings. These clients’ complaints of sore muscles and tendons are usually due to un-necessary stress on the tissues due to sudden changes in direction (during their swing). There is a book and CD that I recommend to my clients for this on my website www.TheRolferGolfer.com that are specifically designed for improving your golf tempo. Good luck and Practice with a purpose.

I can drive nails with a wrench, but that doesn't make it the best tool for the job.

First, a properly fitted and built club will have less inherent variation in its action (as the shaft will be properly floed to minimize offline vibration). Also, properly fitted clubs mean that you don't have to manipulate your swing to make the club work. You can swing your optimal, comfortable swing, and the club will perform. Adding variation by having to swing your four iron a little flatter and your driver swing more slowly so not to over-bend the shaft, and so on just adds opportunity for error.

Thanks much Dick. I have infinite respect for our military men and women. They put their lives on the line every day for our country, and when their service is completed, our society and government shafts them in every possible way. It just makes me sick. I've worked with all the branches, and I see the same lack of support over and over. We have many, many homeless military that deserve better. Since 1967, I've seen them in action, and watched them do things no normal human being can or is willing to do. It is, indeed, a sad day, to see the awful lack of respect and dignity withheld by our society, and our so-called "leaders". I was raised by my grandparents, and my grandpa always said," the destruction of our nation will come from within, not from without". I believe that more each and every day. R2

Kim,

I need to clarify a few things and apologize to a few people that may have misunderstood my reply to your plea for a return of peace and goodwill to this blog.

Firstly, NOTHING you've ever said contributed to my decision to just step away. Quite the contrary, I find you to be a breath of fresh air. We all take good natured jabs at each other and that is part of what makes this blog what is is. It's called family and that's what families do. When we get carried away it's nice to have someone like yourself to put us back on the straight and narrow....something you do in a very positive and constructive way I might add.

I have risen to the bait dangled by the various "clones" that appear here to contribute nothing but dissention in the ranks. Not something I'm proud of. I suspect my attitude of not taking fools lightly has to do with my Scottish/Irish background. I'm normally a very laid back guy, but when I see family attacked I tend to react before I think, just a personal character flaw.

Let me assure you there is nothing any of the regulars have said or done that lead to my decision to walk away. Just to clarify, there were several replies made to me by one of the "clones" directed at Janet that were totally out of line and had no place in a public forum.

Kim, I'm replying to you using Dashboard as I still am unable to to post or reply on the main blog. I'm sure that frustration hasn't helped helped much in this situation either. I've been in touch with customer support and it seems to be something on my end that I've not been able to fix.

Anyone who doesn't who doesn't see the the honesty and passion that Surge and Doc bring to this site is just not paying attention.

I consider the whole Surge Nation family and will not walk out on family. I truly appreciate the concern shown by all who responded. I'm not going anywhere, just unable to post or to reply to most of you.

Kim, thank you for allowing me to attempt to explain.

God Bless.

You made the point that I got attacked for -- " it went about 30 yards further that my current driver." That stirred up a hornet's nest of fury here on the blog when I made that claim for my driver shaft. Shafts make all the difference in the world but you also need a good swing that Don teaches and you also need to be fit and you also need to be flexible and you also need to not crash and burn like Rory did after hitting one bad shot ... like he went from being the top golfer in the world to a guy who makes the same mistakes I do all in a few holes.
